Just got back from Scotland been going for 18 years myself same place called Embo the wife's got relatives up there she's been going for over 45 years. We stay at Grannie's Heilan Hame but we have always missed the aurora but this time we went up twice this year and we eventually got to see it.

I have never been good with a camera I have some good pictures but many just look boring and dull. I took my Sony a6400 with 2 lenses Sony 70-350mm and Sony E 15mm 1.4G I used the 15mm to take pictures of the Aurora they did look good through the viewfinder and screen but got them on the PC and they look crap. The settings I used bulb mode - f1.4 ISO 1600 to 3200 I had to get used to this because I have never tried it in bulb mode before so it was all about timing. I also forgot my tripod and timer shutter release so had to do them all handheld which probably didn't help in the slightest.

I have put these 3 pictures into Aurora HDR and made them look a bit better but next time I am definitely making sure I have packed my tripod and timer.

The light on the caravan didn't help with this one I think this was the main issue with all the pictures I took lights going on and off all the time around near where I was stood couldn't get away from it at all.

Aurora alerts were going off a few nights last week while I was up on Mull but it was cloudy each night except the one with no alerts, though I did manage to shoot the Milky Way that evening.

With an f1.4 lens 4 seconds or so should be ample @ iso1600-3200 as you want to freeze movement. Longer exposures just fill the sky with aurora colours rather than giving any detail to pillars, swirls etc.
 
I find boats to be quite pleasant as a subject. Certainly they can help with making the sea on pictures seem very restful or simply just used as a point of interest. They are a subject you just get lucky with what they look like and where they are at times but at other times they are not so good. It helps having a good terrace overlooking the sea and an island with plenty of boat traffic going by on your holidays as well.

That image is part of a 9 shot hand held pano. Unfortunately I think the overlap wasnt enough on the first 2 shots. I should have taken my tripod but I was fed up with just carrying it around so I left it at home.
