Here is a list of 5 cars. I am intruiged as to what people would choose if they were to choose from this list. If none of the cars interest you, feel free to **** them off. This is a discussion forum, after all. This is not a 'spec me' thread, it's simply a 'which car out of these 5'.

For the sake of argument, we will assume that all cars are 2007ish models and unless otherwise mentioned, mileage is the same, as is price etc etc (Thats not really the point).

1) BMW 330i M Sport Coupe (E92)

Pros: Fantastic 272bhp straight six engine. Almost 40mpg combined. 0-60 in 6 seconds. Smooth and effortless. The traditional BMW formula - RWD and a normally aspirated Straight Six. People claim its the most 'fun' of the non M3's.
Cons: It's a 330i - is it always in the shadow of its bigger brother? Revvy power delivery style, most of the extra power over previous versions of this car comes at the top of the rev range. Electric Power Steering.
Summary: Possibly the most 'sensible' choice in the real world? The best compromise.

2) BMW 335i M Sport Coupe (E92)

Pros: Twin Turbocharged engine with 306bhp. 0-60 in 5.5 seconds. Plenty of performance. Lots of potential as well, a remap gives you 350bhp. Big twin exhuast. A properly 'fast' car. Would suit an Auto well, if thats your bag. Hydraulic PAS instead of Electric PAS in the 330i.
Cons: 30mpg combined. Reliability concerns. Some people comment that its less 'fun' as a 'drivers car' than a 330i.
Summary: Fantastic way to have a half decent reasonably 300bhp car that drives well.

3) BMW 335d M Sport Coupe (E92)

Pros: Almost as quick as a 335i, 0-60 in 5.9 and 286bhp. 40mpg combined. Remappable.
Cons: DAG DAG DAG DAG DAG. Only available as an automatic. Shares reliability concerns with 335i.
Summary: By allowing the dagadagdagdagdag noise into your life, you get almost 335i performance for almost 330i costs.

4) BMW 530i M Sport Saloon (E60 LCI)

Pros: Same 272bhp Six as the 330i. Great engine. LCI huge improvement over previous model. Slightly better built and better quality than the 3. Feels like a more expensive car. More practical. 38mpg combined.
Cons: Is a discontinued model so represents a significant depreciation risk, not helped by the fact 5's are not as popular on the used market as 3's. Is not as roundly 'good looking' as the 3 coupe, unlike many other BMW's the E60 is odd in that from some angles it looks great yet from others it looks pap.
Summary: Great Sport Saloon, again probably the most rounded and 'sensible' package.

5) BMW 535d M Sport Saloon (E60 LCI)

Pros: As 335d, though performance broadly similar to 330i rather than 335i.
Cons: Same cons as 335d *and* 530i added together. Seems to be the poster boy of the E60 range so is often considerably more expensive than the 530i and/or higher mileage.
Summary: Expensive and diesely.

Pick one. Or **** them all off.

Your choice.

I've got a feeling If I stumped for the 330i I'd only be pining after a 335i soon after. 335i for me, unless the maths make a 335d more worthwhile - I imagine a remapped 335d could pull down a house :p. No E60 for me, just don't like the look of them and much prefer the 3 coupe.

335 and a remap, I honestly can't see why anyone would choose anything else in Petrol form.

Need better economy? There is Diesel. Need a better drivers car? Don't buy a BMW (or stump up for an M3).

I can't close my eyes an picture all the cars posted which holds me back a bit as there are only certain looking BMW's that i like.

So from the text only I'd go with the sensible option - 1. BMW 330i M Sport Coupe (E92)

335d or 535d for me.

Well actually it's looking more like 525d or 530d for me, but that's only because the 525d is just out of reach.

After running the 330d for a year and realising just how economical it can be when driving carefully, I fail to see the point of the petrol equivalents. If they were noisy clattery 4-pot diesels then yes, I'd be inclined to ignore them and get the petrol, but they aren't. If I wanted a car for out and out fun then it wouldn't be a non M powered 3 or 5 series.

For you number 2 for me number 4.

If you are going for a 3 series, get the proper job to save you thinking what if.

I'd have the 330i coupe, because I'd rather have a coupe than a saloon, it has more than enough power for me and I'd get a better example for the money than with a 335i. I've got nothing against diesel engines per se, but the petrol is a better match for the car.

You said petrol next last week, you are so indecisive :p

2 or 4. Depending on whether I needed a big car. Probably 2) as I personally have no need for the size of the 5.

335i for me

Gorgeous car and sounds absolutely immense. I don't know if aftermarket exhausts are your thing, but hearing a 335i with the BMW Performance(I think? Maybe Milltek) exhaust, and it was just gorgeous. Plus don't you get all the toys as standard near enough in this as it's the flagship model?

30mpg isn't that bad, and I'd imagine it's not far off what you get now surely? All that power with that sort of consumption isn't all that bad.

Plus you'll have all that sensation of OMGTORXXXXXX with the twin turbos

Do it! And in black too, 335i in anything other than black is just criminal

I'd have to drive the other cars, but the 335i for me obviously stands out a mile, would really be interested in driving the dag dag though but the noise the 335i makes makes it all worthwhile if not doing mega miles/don't care about the consumption too much.

i think theres such a thing as overkill. whilst the idea of a twin turbo BMW is nice, i think id prefer a more linear delivery and the sound of the stock v6 without a turbo hiss on it. i like the idea of RWD, revvy engine, 300bhp (im sure u could do some mods to get it to 300~).

you justified why yourself:

"Revvy power delivery style, most of the extra power over previous versions of this car comes at the top of the rev range." i drive a car that revs to 8,200rpm and i enjoy that style.

but thats not to say i wouldnt love an R32 skyline with turbo hiss however. infact im considering getting rid oif the corolla next year (when ill hopefully have 5 years protected ncb) and getting an 200sx or an R32...

That was purely for the engine noise and turbo problems, but then with anything that new I'd be buying a 3rd party warranty/extended BMW warranty, so its a moot point, and I'd rather go back to the economy of the diesel.
