Hello again i require some insight and input plz. One of my bro's turns 18 soon (Matt, who's a 24/7 Wow and HL2 freak), so me and my other two bro's have decided to put most of our pressie money together and replace he's tired 6800ultra as suprise. We can stretch to £50 each but no more (as we are buying other stuff too), rules out GTS - so best from the rest sub £150. I have idea's, however would be nice to see what people suggest so here's his current set up >

939 x2 4400
Asus A8N32 sli delux (this is going in btw, hes running some Gigabyte AGP board at mo)
6800Ultra
2gb mem
500w PSU
Audigy 2 soundcard
Windows XP (no Vista till next year for him if that)

He does like having all the lush gfx settings on when possible. (not going to happen with current gfx card these days), so suggestions on gfx card welcome and apreciated. :)

agree with that reply ^
(also a 7950 GT in the same price range)

Maybe if you speak to your bro about it he would pay out the extra himself. I know i would rather pay 40-50 and get a 8800 than pay nothing and get an older card. But then mabe you'd prefer to keep it a surprise. (and also it may seem cheap making him pay for his own presents :p )

btw, i love the thread title :D

Heh like the idea above, but hes deffo not knowing about it (esp been 18th) ;)

Edit: yeah i know stick another £10/15 ontop each and were close to GTS price range, cant be done sadly as money i and rest put aside for his birthday is already way overspent. Limit was £30 each on gfx card but we werent buying him some 7600gt so pushed it to £50 each. ;)

well if the limit is a hard 150 sheets and not a penny more, by the time you've included postage - i assume you're buying online?, then the only option is an x1950pro. you might as well get the 512mb sapphire for 135. :)

My idea was the 256mb x1950pro, 512mb sapphire noticably better or are we just talking monster gaming rez then buy 512mb or better card as per normal?

Well, we can just about scrape to these two>

I would imagine the latter of the two better by far?

Edit: Hmm should ask this idiot question too since i mainly buy Nvidia cards on the whole, that Asus A8N32 sli delux board dont have any known issues with Ati cards does it (except obvious no go on crossfire option).

actually, just looking at the prices, i'd get the 256mb card for 105 sheets. i didn't realise they were that much cheaper. the difference in performance is going to be negligible. :)

i must admit i have no idea how the 7950gt performs so i can't comment on that. :p

well of course the x1950xt is better than the pro. i just don't think it's worth the extra 50 sheets. that's nearly 50% more and i don't think it offers the best bang per buck. but then again, another way to look at it is to get the best you can afford? it's up to you. :)

It's too bad you can't go the extra bit to get a DX10 card - still it's good value for money to get the ATI one. Just a bit of a shame you can't give him a bit more future-proof hardware.

8600 range could be a solution, and it will give DX10. But...if your looking at raw benchmarks, the X1900 is better.

Good choice - it's money well invested.
