Right, I've made another post pertaining to this, but it didn't really achieve much in the way of clearing the mist.
I desperately need to get a laptop, and I cannot, for the life of me, fathom my way through it. I'm so far out of touch with latest releases, I don't know what's what anymore.

So here's one for you.

If you're interested, select me a laptop, for gaming, that meets certain requirements. Whichever laptop I buy, the bloke that suggested it, gets £50 Paypal / Wired / chequed to say thanks for taking the burden off me, and giving me someone to blame if it goes wrong.

Here are the requirements:

  • Must be able to play the latest game releases such as Bioshock, STALKER, Supreme Commander, at an acceptable level
  • Must not suffer any known hardware problems or physical issues which has occurred to several people that have bought the system. (Such as poor build quality that breaks, sound not working right, etcetc)
  • Must be value for money. By that, I mean that for my top-line budget, it must have everything it can possibly get, as far as cpu and ram goes, and the gfx card obviously, is top of the line, or as damn near as.
  • The company must be able to supply the system within ten working days, at the least.
  • Warranties must be the basic, cheapest model. No expensive cover schemes.
  • Must have good battery life

The budget is £1500 top line, absolute top line.

I can't think of anything else that needs to go into the requirements, nothing immediately obvious.
The supply date is an important one. I'm a soldier, and I've got two weeks R&R from Iraq in which to order and recieve this system, and once I'm back in Iraq, if it's not quite right, or has issues, then I'm going to have an attractive paperweight for another three months.

If you can, please give a short review of its pros and cons.

That's it! Good luck to the winner, and I hope this isn't breaking any Forum Rules. :p

to be honest for playing the newer games your be better off getting a desktop pc, the main reason being the amount of hardware performance that will be needed to play games with some eye candy and also the more powerful the hardware the battary power will be an issue, so you might have to comprimise.

could you consider a desktop pc or is there a reason for the laptop choice ?

nydryl, that might be a great laptop but unfortunately you can't say where you got it from because it is a competitor and therefore against forum rules. This might unfortunately mean that this competition is somewhat curtailed, sorry. :)

//Edit: Haha, haven't actually been around Hardware for ages thats a competitor :P

//New Edit:
Look for the Dell XPS M1710 i just won't link but i't not hard to imagine where its come from!

I'm using the XPS line right now, and its FANTASTIC hardware for the money, great value. The M1710 can be specced up to whatever you want, i think it starts around £1100. :) I did say originally before i deleted it all i don't want your money i just want to help :) I use an XPS and love it, i'm pretty sure you'll be more than happy with it. Check www.notebookreview.com for good reviews HTH :)

laptop wise i dont use anyone other than the two mentioned above and a site that make custom laptops but thats only because my customers want certain spec for stupid amounts of money

I didn't link or mention the name of any competitor. Surely that is not against forum rules? I havn't read them fully so will be happy to be corrected!

I see your from Dundee, a follower of the Dark Blues?

i believe you can mention products but linking/saying where you got your own or can get the actual item from is not allowed.

for example you can say "you want to get Corsair 520 PSU" but you cant say "you want to get a corsair 520 psu, you can get it from *insert other website address*"

edit: by the way the psu is not related to this thread, its just an example as said :p

HCRTrooper, what would you deem an acceptable battery life from your requirements?

Taken from Dell XPS M1710 review at NotebookReview.com :

With the screen brightness at 6/7 (near maximum, keep in mind), wireless at full power, and while surfing the Internet, I clocked the battery power to be two hours and five minutes...

Thats just web surfing!

I didn't link or mention the name of any competitor. Surely that is not against forum rules, although I have not fully read them.

I saw it before the edit and there was a link to another webstore, you've edited now so that should be fine although if being really technical disguised references to competitors is not allowed either.

I would imagine that mentioning anything OCuK do not sell would be promoting a potential 'competitor'!

It doesn't really matter, they sell laptops and desktops (as well as possibly parts) so do OcUK therefore they are classed as competitors. Whether the markets overlap much is of little significance. I'm not giving an opinion on the rules, I'm simply letting you know what they are so you do not get a suspension. :)

//edit nope, I'm not originally from Dundee so my joke of a team of a team is Hearts. ;) :)

Jesus you were quick! As soon as I posted it I changed it! I appreciate why you said what you said now.

It could be worse, you could be and Arab!

Dell XPS m1710 or a rock.

Have a dell xps m1710 myself, was spec'd out very high when i bought it from ocuk last aug.

T2600 (the core2duo's are faster than this now)
7900gtx (has since been upgraded by dell for free to a 7950gtx)
2gb ram (dell are offering me 4gb for £70)
120gb 5400rpm drive
1920x1200 glossy screen

works on both vista and xp perfectly, can play bioshock at native res (no aa/af) perfectly, runs very well.

With xp on a new battery i got 3.5 hours with vista i get 4.2 hours, have since gone down to 40% battery wear so get about 1.5 hours.

Dell XPS support is great and they build them quick, recently i ordered a custom vostro 17" for a mate, was ordered, built and delivered in 4 days. :D
