... £350 notes and for the wife for xmas... also picked up 5100 for dummies for the missus as well... extra high powered battery, blah blah, few bits and bobs. Hoping she'll get back into it now... she's been out the SLR loop for a long time 15 years... so hopefully this'll spark her interest again.

Seems to be a popular choice at the moment... fingers crossed the missus will like it. Anyone care to comment how big the RAW files are on top res or any handy tips, be sure to let me know.

I'm getting one for Christmas, also with the kit lens. I think I'll get a 70-300 as well shortly after. Can't wait looks great!

As for your question, as far as I'm aware, 1megapixel = 1megabyte, so if you are taking max res that would be 16.2megapixels so 16.2mb. Someone else will have to confirm this though.

Where'd you get yours from matey? I went SLRhut in the end, just came today from the states...

Very very common dslr seems everyone is picking them up now. I got mine in July. Lovely piece of kit. Was gutted when I found out the d5200 came out only a couple months after words but looking at it there is no difference when it comes to picture quality . Same sensor and all just the 24mp for blow ups which I never do : /

I think jessops are doing it with the 18-105 lens at the moment

I was going to go SLRhut, but ended up going Currys as with cashback it's around £370. It was between it and the 600D for me, but reviews all agreed that the D5100 took better photos, and I'm not concerned with video really, so I went with it.

I was going to get body only and buy a lens but thought the 18-55 would be quite versatile for starting out. I think I'll get the Sigma 70-300mm and maybe the Sigma 10-20mm for some landscapes etc.

Going to pick one up in the next few days. I only need body only though, so I'm wondering where is the best place to get one from?

Jessops only sell it with the 18-105mm zoom, and Wex don't have any stock at all.

RAW files are between 12-21mb from what I've seen when I use to own the same camera. Depends on the data captured for the scene, hence the variable size. Easy files to process though so don't worry about it. I use to process 21mp canon 5D mk ii RAW files on a 4gb RAM dual core laptop (which I still own, macbook air ftw!) and also didn't have any major issues tbh.
