Apologies if I don't explain this one very well.......soon find out if anyone replies :o

I have got a LCD TV and view through a Freeview box and when viewing Sky news some of the outside broadcasts/reports sometimes show a black border down the sides.

The border can be wider on one side than the other.

Can someone explain why this is to a noob and if it can be corrected.

Probably because the transmission is 4:3 and the screen is wide screen, have you set you sky box to letterbox?

There maybe a stretch to fir option on your TV too, but obviously this will distort the pic to fit the screen

:o I just noticed this happens on my CRT TV downstairs.

Not set my TV to letterbox.........should this be set to it?

Edit Sorry meant my Freeview box to letterbox not my TV

:o I knew that ;)

Freeview box has the following options;

Display Mode 16:9 or 4:3
Display Format Normal or Letterbox

So should it be 16:9 and Normal?

Or 4:3 and Letterbox then I can stretch the picture with the TV settings?

Spot on. Much like yesterday when watching the six nations, the broadcast was French and not recorded in widescreen, therefore those watching on Sky/Freeview received a 4:3 broadcast but in widescreen therefore all viewers on 16:9 sets could see black borders.

Thanks for that...........you have educated the old man again ;)

By the way Matblack I managed to get hold of one of the QED Scarts thanks.
