Hi,

My 19" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro CRT is dying, and I'm debating trying a TFT monitor for the first time. I use it for both gaming and internet/word processing. Most monitors are out now seem to be widescreen; being a complete novice when it comes to most aspects of computers could someone tell me whether on a 19" widescreen, I would see less of, say, a document in Word, than on my CRT? Reading through the various threads I see some people refer to losing a bit of height, but its not clear to me whether thats just off the monitor, or off the actual picture? If so would going to a 20" or 22" compensate for this so the actual picture would be back to what it would be on my 19" CRT?

I also don't think my graphics card (an X800 PE) supports widescreen, so in case I decide I can't stretch to upgrading that too, could anyone recommend a good 19" non-widescreen TFT for gaming as well?

what resolution are you running the CRT at? if you want to maintain the height look for a TFT with the same or simalar native resolution in height.

with widescreen, i think you will need about 22" to get the same physical height as a 19" standard aspect, but what you see of a document depends on what resolution you are at.

i dont think you should ahve any probelms runnign widescreen on your graphics card.

I recently went from a 19" CRT running at 1600x1200 to a 22" WS LCD at 1680x1050 (Samsung 226BW). My graphics card is an X800 Bravo, so I don't think you should have any issues with yours.

I worked out beforehand that you lose approx half an inch of actual screen height, but as far as the image is concerned I have lost 150 pixels. It's hardly noticeable at all...twice the height of the allowed sig image size on here in fact.

hmm

Thanks for the replies, they help a lot. I'm currently running the CRT at 1280x1024 in Windows (otherwise find text a little too small), and 1600x1200 in WoW. Hmm. Just done a web search and 150 pixels is about 4 cm, which to me sounds, and measuring on my current screen looks, a lot :)

Guess I wouldn't notice any difference using Word etc given my current res, but would knock a lot off the vertical view in games. Think I'm leaning towards the non-widescreen TFTs.
