So I stumbled on this kickstarter

What exactly is a pin hole lens ? for the $41 pledge it seems like a good deal if the lens is actually useful but the examples shown on the page don't exactly wow me, the movie footage looks alright though so I'm left wondering what the fuss is ? From what I can gather the aim is to destroy image quality and make it look like you took the photo/video in the 30's so it's basically like applying a filter/fx in photoshop no ?
Hopefully someone knows if these lenses are useful or more mickey mouse useless but possibly fun ?
