Ping and internet speed

I was having problems with my ping over wifi while playing games. I then got a powerline adapter and my ping is now nearly identical to what it was directly though Ethernet.

I was wondering though how else I can improve my ping. Does internet download/upload speed have any effect on speed? Also my modem (adsl) cable is ancient, would buying a new one of them or changing the adsl filters improve my ping at all? Thanks

As above there's nothing else you can do, other than change the type of connection you have or move house.

I've noticed Fibre is a lot faster (lower ping) than plain ADSL though. IIRC cable (Virgin) was good too.

I am having some Internet speed issues too. When I test it with an online test, I get about 20mbps and 40ms ping. But anyway, I can't play most online games, it is unbearable

40ms is a bit high for my liking.

Are you connected to the router via wireless or cable? You can do this to check via command prompt/powershell the latency between your PC and router to see if the high ping is either your network or net:

Code:
ping 192.168.1.1

Or 192.168.1.254 depending on your router's IP.

The best thing you can do is run a network cable from the router to your PC.

Powerline and wifi will always be worse.
