Need some advice, I'm with Virgin Media, came from PIPEX (No problems with PIPEX axcept I went away for a few months and they were expensive).

Throughout the day, evening and night my pings jump all over the place, try playing games and it can range from 25-300 (where I get kicked). Have tested the computer, done all the usual ie checked nothing is downloading, even changed machines and switched off everything else.

What could be causing the ping to be so unstable - I am not being capped (have had that in the past so can recognise when this is happening). If it doesnt get any better can I withdraw from my Virgin contract as, for me, the connection is no longer fit for purpose?

Couple more bits of info - and I cant edit posts from work!

Router is the Netgear standard virgin one,

With pipex I used to play 2 machines on BF2, with skype running and still get sub 50 pings, not only 1 machine nothing running during the day is pings bouncing between 35 to 150.

tried dropping the MTU to 1452 from 1498 (think those figures are right) and made a small difference but ping still jumping about.

Call your ISP and ask to be put on a "Fast Path" profile rather than "Interleaved". If the person on the phone dosen't have a clue, register on their forums and go from there.

Any chance you could post a link to them - my work computer wont get through the virginmedia initial page (but sometimes can get fooled if you link past it) - darn company trying to stop us accessing emails and the like!!!!

Still having issues with virgin - I try to play BF2 anytime in the evening and I get pings bouncing around from 47 - 2500 (and kicked!).

Been onto thier tech support and have done many trace routes, they seem to think that its not an issue with thier servers and I am already on fastpath. Anyone got any ideas, I have clean installed windows and BF2, no other machines are on the network and they it is hardwired in.

I used to have no issues before going to virgin - now I, and the tech support, are stumped as the problem is ping is unstable and trace route only occasionally hits it to show an error!

If you use Outlook express then setup a account\news and use news.virginmedia.com

post there and see.

thanks, have managed to get them to move me to FAST but still, the unstable pings are killing me - they go from 20 - 600, back down, then up again until I get kicked. Anyone got any other ideas?
