Ping on Sky Broadband max

I'm on Sky broadband max (20mb) and get a rubbish ping in COD4 and other games. I'm not sure whether this is something to do with a setting on the line. (cant rememeber the name but i read on here you had to ring them up to change something technical) Or whether its the fact im using a wireless router and receiver and need something to make my ping decent.

I spoke to a mate at the weekend who said he bought some sort of plugs and now is ping is loads better (with the same connection, without ringing his BB provider)

I dont play games much but when i do i like them to be playable and not jump around all over the place

The setting you ask to be changed when you ring Sky up is Max Delay, they will change it to 8 for you if you tell them you're a gamer. It might make your connection less stable tho, meaning you'll have to sync at a lower speed, it will probably be fine with this setting tho.

Wireless shouldn't make too much difference afaik, when i ping bbc.co.uk my ping only increases by 1 using wireless over wired. Try pinging a few sites wired and wireless if you can, this should give you some idea wether it's a wireless issue or not.

The Plugs are probably Homeplugs, where you use your house phone extentions connected to your router to create a wired network through your house, I've never used these tho, so couldn't advise on them.

Would it be stable enough for downloads etc to run normally if i get them to change the max delay setting to 8?

What does it actually do to make ping lower in games?

It should be completely stable, my Max Delay is set to 8, and im synced at 19Mb/s, and i've never lost sync with constant 2MB/s downloads. You might have to increase your target SNR to get a stable connection tho, once you've found the right speed that it's stable at tho, it should be as stable as it is now. It may be completely fine, and you have to change nothing tho :)

I *think* it changes the maximum amount of time that your connection waits between each point in the connection, which inturn decreases the overall travel time from your pc to a server. Someone feel free to correct me if im wrong tho, as this is just a guess really :D.

Bless, I called Sky to see if they could increase my connection from 8mbit and also reduce my ping times.

Guy I spoke to, didn't have a clue when I mentioned tier 2 sky bb support and max delay settings :( but he said he could see that they should be able to increase my connection to 10mbit which he will raise a ticket to the customer support team to initiate.

So hopefully my connection speed increases a bit but I'm doubtful my ping time will decrease. Edit: not that its slow - pinging google is around 35ms with a rock solid connection atm *touchwood*

Once the speeds increased should I call back and chance my luck someone else has heard of max delay?

apologies to thread hijack but it is kinda similar :)

You probably should have asked for the ticket number for the customer solutions team and got transferred to them. I had to do this as my router was syncing at 15Mb/s while the SNR was about 12, after about 2 minutes they changed the SNR target and i was syncing at 19Mb/s.

Being put straight through to them also lets you change your Max Delay setting at the same time too.

I'd probably just ring back up, say you have a ticket open and can they transfer you to CST. If you don't have a ticket open, just say you want to change your Max Delay for gaming, that should also get you put straight through.

It's the interleave delay - Kitz explains it as well as anyone.

What are everyone elses pings who are on sky bb max?

Mine -

ping bbc.co.uk - min37, max47, avg44
ping google.co.uk min44, max59, avg54

well seems CST team have messed with my connection but now I sync at 5.7Mb, my SNR has jumped from 6.6 to 16.6db and pinging google is now 52ms instead of 35ms

In the queue to CST atm as the guy I spoke to initially, said that CST has finished their configuration. I was like 'cool but now my speed has halved and ping doubled'

I await to see how this one pans out

well that was a 50 minute call to sky I'm never going to get back, man the guy waffled on and on - I entertained him as thank god calling sky numbers from skytalk is free.

Anyway he set it all back to how it was and I now sync at 7.7 instead of 8  but least my pings are back to normal :)

google.co.uk = Minimum = 35ms, Maximum = 36ms, Average = 35ms
bbc.co.uk = Minimum = 28ms, Maximum = 29ms, Average = 28ms

I rang them a couple of days ago and my max delay was already on the best setting - 8. He said to take the front off our front socket (one with a horizontal groove accross it) and plug it into the port thats behind it. I did this. He took the noise attenuation off or something then told me to test ping and it was about the same so he put it back on.
I could actually see my router resetting itself when he did this.

He said it could be the phone extension lead that we are using to move the router to the middle of our front room that is making ping a bit lower. Could this be the issue?
On virgin media pings used to be around 30, now they are more like 90 or 100. Download speeds are fine (around 1.8mbps) and no disconnections. Im using a Netgear WN111 wireless adapter but will try a cable tonight if i manage to find and borrow one from work. Doubt this will make much of a difference though

How is gaming for everyone else? I tried COD4 and medal of honour, both were inplayable

That settles it, i connected by a wire and it now pings google at 29 instead of 51. Games works fine without messing up.

Is it possible to get a wireless receiver that makes ping decent?

Wireless will always have a higher latency than a cable. If your gaming, I'd always strongly suggest that you stick with a cable.

I hardly game, ill just keep a wire under my desk (router is a few metres away in front room) im not using cable because id need it trailing accross the front room floor.

What are these homeplugs like? Are they worth it, can they even be used with Sky routers?
