Hi Folks,

Please see attached screen shot of me pinging the bbc news website.

how do I find out the reason for these ping spikes? Is it something to do with vista and something accessing the net (I have just built a new pc and have never used vista before). I first noticed these spikes playing CS:S, again I have nothing to compare it to since my old pc couldn't really play any games.

Any suggestions on how to fix this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Matt

Hi,

It's virgin media, I think it's 2mb service. I have just tried a to ping the same ip on my macbook and there is no loss or huge spikes. I am in another room though. Could a pcs location affect this is is it just down to vista?

Both Wirelessly to a wrt54gl Linksys router, the router being on the ground floor and both the pc and laptop being on the first floor

Have moved my PC closer to my router (still the router is downstairs and the pc is upstairs) but now the PC is right on top of the router.

I have justtried pinging the router rather than a website/ server and I stil get loss, see below.

So it's either something to do with my pc or the router. When I ping using my macbook it seems fine and there is no loss.

Having never used Vista before I'm unsure what settings need to be checked/ changed to get the best out of it for networking.

Also, will changing my WRT54GL's firmware to Tomato help at all with the signal?

Thanks

Matt

Hi Folks,

Done a bit more messing around and it is deffinately the wireless connection from my pc to the router. I have also installed tomato on my router and upped the signal strength etc but it hasn't helped.

I had the router set up right next to my pc and pinged it and I got loss and high pings (see screen shot below). I then created a wired connection between the two and pinged it and it was fine.

What can I check on my vista install that could be causing this? Could it possibly be a virus/ malware (I have run a virus scan and adaware and it didn't find anything). How can I diagnose where the problem lies?

Thanks for all the help

Matt
