Ping spikes when downloading

Hi all,

I am on the 500mb package from virgin. Everything is fine until someone else in the house downloads something when the ping spikes horrendously, i assume because the line is being maxed.

We have a netgear nighthawk r8000 and i have tried the dynamic QOS that it offers, and whilst it reduces the spikes from 200ms to more like 80/90 this is still pretty unplayable compared to my usual 15.

Im looking for a way to resolve this. I have debated a new router with better QOS however before dropping ~300 on the ones ive been looking at i would like some reassurance for anyone who has solved similar issues.

Any ideas/suggestions for new hardware?

I got sick of other people using my connection and choking what I get down to sub 10mb with horrific ping when downloading or streaming a whole tv series or something...

So I changed the switch that splits up the wired connection from a dumb switch to one with bandwidth limiting and now everyone else can do whatever with half the connection without screwing me over.

I did consider a router with similar features and probably also wireless controls but a switch was cheaper and controlled the major issue of unreasonable cabled internet hogging.

anything that supports fq_codel or cake would work well, so anything on the openwrt support list capable of 500 mb, also i have an asus which does a good job, with maxed speed tests on two machines, the ping tops at 84 but averages 20 ms (84 only happened once) thats using asus adaptive qos set with custom limits.
