pinging a port

anyone know of a way to ping a port to test if it's open?

IIRC you can't ping ports as they are on different OSI layers. Use telnet instead with the IP followed by the port to test if it's open.

yup, telnet is whats needed - if the port is open, you should see a black CMD window, or possibly some text depending on the port/protocol you are testing

Much the same as telnet but it gives you a little more info like how long did it take to connect to the port, etc.

thanks everyone. Used telnet, and when it went to the black window i assumed the port was open, as when i made up a port it said it couldn't connect.

That's correct A blank screen is a good thing!

MS have a util called portqry you can also use to query the status of ports.

start > run > cmd > netstat -an

that would confirm
