Hey Steedie, you are not alone of course. They are my little mates!
I love hamsters and my last one was two and a half when she had a stroke, she seemed to get better after a while but then when we moved house the stress seemed to make her have another one, it was heart breaking seeing her not really being able to move, just lying there breathing deeply, the next day I took her across town to the vet and was pretty sure what was going to happen, put her on the vets table and she was trying to run but just kept falling over, it broke my heart, hamsters can recover well from strokes but she'd already had one and she was clearly in some pain. So we had her put to sleep and looking at her after with the tube in her mouth, she was at peace but I've not cried like that before or since.
I was pleased she managed to make it to my new house so we could bury her with us.
It was a few years but I've got a new one now called Winnie and he's two and a half now too, he's starting to slow down a lot, not coming out his house as much and drinking a lot more water, so I'm preparing myself, I don't think I can have another one after this guy.
It doesn't really matter on the size of the animal, the emotional part will be linked to the joy you got out of them.
Best wishes fellow ham lover!
