Pipes in X1900

Can someone please explain how many pipelines a X1900 has because a lot of websites (including overclockers) say "48 pixel shader processors" but im not sure if that is actually pipelines?

i am prob wrong but i think they are pipelines , it wont make much of a diff what ever they are , on games that need a lot of shader work the ati card **** all over nvidia lol

Thats just not true and inaccurate.
 
X1900xt - 16 piplines x3 = 48 pixel shader processors
X1900gt - 12 piplines x3 = 36 pixel shader processors


" pixel pipeline is a videocard part that transfers pixel information. The more pixel pipelines, the faster the video card can process pixels.

Current top-end videocards, such as the Radeon X1900 XTX and the GeForce 7950 GX2, offer 16 (effectively 48, 3 pixel processors per pipe) and 2x24 pixel pipelines respectively."

So you are saying that the x1900 has the effective performance of 48 pixel pipelines?
 
I don't think it's cus of all the shaders, I just think it's been well optimised for ati drivers. My old 16 pipe, 16 pixel processor x1800xt ran oblivion incredibly well, only a couple of frames per second slower than my 48 pixel processor x1900xt. So pixel processors can't be the reason oblivion runs so well on ATi cards.

Physical pipelines seems to have a much greater effect on performance in general than number of processors.
 
a lot of websites had been throwing around 48 pixel pipelines when the X1900 came out, which is just wrong. The X1900 XT/XTX have 16 pixel pipelines but 3 pixel processors per pipeline which gives 48 pixel processors in total.

This gives slight performance boosts in most games but can give major increases in certain games that need complex shaders to be executed very fast, e.g. Age of Empires 3, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and TESIV: Oblivion. For example in oblivion the performance may be similiar to the X1800 (with 16 pixel shader processors) but where there is a scene with intense use of shaders the X1900 will take less of a performance hit.
 
Think of it (very losely) of HT for Intel, where each pipeline emulates being 3 and can do more shader processes but not at the same pace of a true 48 pipeline card.

Erm, yes it can. Its a shader intense game, nvidia only have half the amount, but have 8 more pipelines, so they are nearly as quick.


7900GTX: 24 pipes/24 shaders?
X1900XT-X: 16 Pipes/48 shaders.

I think Nvidia cards just performs poor in Oblivion and I'm sure its not the fault of Nvidia. Even my X1800 in Oblivions feels more fluid in the woods with the tree swaying than an 7950GX2 overclocked. :eek:
