hi all

over the last couple of days my pipex 2mb conection has been running anything between 1/2mb -2mb

my router is showing this

Downstream Rate: 2272 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 288 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 29 db
Upstream Margin: 23 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 19
Upstream Line Attenuation: 10
are these ok ?

this is my lst speed test from adslguide

Downstream 912 Kbps (114.0 KB/sec)
Upstream 247 Kbps (30.9 KB/sec)

ive spoken to tech support and they have told me that im not on the managed connection list

ive done 5 BT line test but BT quote that a 2mb connection can run from 400-2000kbps so they wont do a thing

anyone else having the same issues

is it time to move on?

aye, exact same issue, i posted in a diff thread last week : http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17537096

i rang up and things were better the next day, but still not 2mb like they were 2 weeks ago. as u said, they said i wasnt on traffic shaping either.

they told me to do the 5 tests thing, via logging in as speedtest@whaterver_thingy, but although the internet always connected, all webpages would time out so i never could do the speed test without logging in through pipex. btw did they give you a password for that? because my router wont accept a blank password! and i cant get my comp close enough to the line directly.

however i continued with the tests, but i dont know what to do next. did they contact u?

anyhoo, when he was on the phone with me i got a speed of 114kbps!!! (~10kB/s?)
later that evening it was 40 kb/s. now it ranges from 700 - 1700 :/

but have been with them for almost 2 years without any problems, so i'm prepaired to wiat a little while for a fix

If you mean [email protected]in (or whatever it actually is) then there isn't a password associated with that username but you should be able to enter anything into the password field.

When connected as the BT Test you won't be able to browse the internet - the only thing that will work is the speed test that you should have been given by Pipex.

The BT test will tell you the speed between the exchange and your modem/router. If your line syncs at 2Mbit then you should get 2Mbit when you do the speed test. This test doesn't take into account your ISP or any contention that may be causing problems.

If your ISP asked you to do this test, then give them the results you get.

There isn't a password required for the BT Speedtester login either. It will take into account exchange issues though - the only bit that's really removed is the ISP.

You're on 2Mbit and getting 114k download sustained ?
Whats wrong with that exactly ? You have to take into account TCP/IP packet overhead as well.

Overheads aren't going to equate for approximately 1Mbit of bandwidth though. 114Kb/s on 1Mbit wouldn't be too bad, on 2Mbit it's awful.
