Hi.

I appear to be the go-to guy at work when it comes to PC problems, and now I've been given a computer that is just that, a problem. This PC (notebook really) has so many viruses on that it might take a physical form any minute now and attack me.

I've decided to start over and wipe the hard drive clean and re-install XP. I'm going with XP because the PC has only 512 RAM and Win7 might kill it so XP it is. Now, I have a problem. I don't have the MOBO installation software so obviously I can't get the ethernet to work to connect to the web. I'm selling the guy my old XP dvd so things are all above board, but it won't contain any software for me to be able to connect on line. Any way around that?

Another concern of mine. My XP disc is about 4 years old and shop bought. Would it work on the Notebook? Reason I ask is that they usually have OEM software versions of OS's on.

Hope it all made sense.

Thanks.

Your copy of XP might be of a different service pack than the OEM key on the laptop. You can verify it will work by starting the install in a virtual machine using VMWare Player to see if it will accept the key.

Drivers wise, look on the notebook manufacturer's website to see what they have.

Hey,

It's an Acer Notebook without any restore disks or and disks for that matter.

edit.

Acer Aspire One, on their site now but asking for model number

Thanks. I actually got that far, have XP files sitting on my external HD and now it refuses to boot into the installation. I've tried it in an image file, the files by itself, nothing. The start up sequence is also correct. It boots from the external HD first, bit it's not recognizing the files. Any ideas?
