Hello my fellow forum members.

As a recent thread within the sub division of the forum. I posted about living in London as I already have a placement. Some family "problems" have a risen and the possibility of living in London is seeming less and less doable by the day.

So my current problem is looking for a placement close or commutable too within the West Midlands area.

I am studying Computer networks and Security on track for a 2:1 I am looking at basic level technician roles anything at all. I am doing my own research but the point of this post is to see if anyone who works in any companies or knows of anything going AT ALL. Could possible help me out or even if anyone knows of any websites.

Ones so far I have used are gradcracker and ratemyplacement.

Any help would be great and appreciated on a huge scale.

Thank you!

Hey guys I have done this. Sadly my Uni is terrible in helping they send emails about placements but most if not all so far are in London. I have sent him an email before I posted here giving him updates on my situation but wont hear back till Tuesday.

They could at least print you a list of local employers nearby. At this stage, I would try approaching as many companies directly as possible, with an open letter stating what you are looking for, your qualifications/predicted grade and how you can see yourself fitting into the company. If you dodge HR, it's quicker.

Add this to the list: http://www.milkround.com/jobs/graduate-jobs-and-schemes/it-and-telecommunications/.

Also check placement pages of other universities. Worst case scenario: walk into your IT services department and ask there; you'd be surprised. :p

Edit:

For schools/public sector internships, it may be better to hit up your local council.

Thank you for all the information. This is very helpful.

To everyone I have made a meeting this Tuesday. The uni does tell you of what others are doing however they are quick to show you IBM intel which are all closed now. I would much rather somewhere close to home.

Dont worry Guys the day I am back at uni Tuesday I am going straight to the office! In the mean time 2 emails have been sent. I was reaching out here for any other ideas that would be good to try ! Thank you :)

Checked it sadly gradcrakcer is one of the ones I am using.

Aren't most placements paid for? I know for a fact you can get them. And London placements should pay more too due to the higher living costs.

Also I'm pretty sure you can file for student finance too in your placement if it's not paid.

Yes they are. The placement I had lined up in London was 15k a year and I would get around £1400 a year form finance. However some family issues and its going to b a LOT more difficult than london. I would much rather find something closer to home.

Yes, you used to get some reduced student finance payments. But as the OP said in the original thread -- London placements were offering something around basic wage + overtime. And by basic, I mean desk job average from outside London basic.

Correct. It is a job I am more than willing to do don't get me wrong I know I will start off at the bottom but its becoming more and more unrealistic. I am looking for job same sort of thing but closer to home. If anyone does know anything going please do inbox me. Thanks guys for all the help so far!
