And thats OLD York, not New York!

I've been a couple of times in recent years so I know a few good places to eat already, but I bet there are still loads of places there I have not had a chance to visit yet. I like a variety of foods, though I do have a preference for American, mexican and Indian. Italian I can take or leave. And good quality British cuisine is always welcome :)

Places I know for definite I like and would consider going to again include:

Oscars - Never had a chance to sample their burgers last time, want to correct that this time

Gourmet Burger Kitchen - Also good for a burger

Harkers - pub grub, but very tasty! Especially the fish and chips.

Cafe Rouge - Simple and tasty french style cuisine.

Dean Court Hotel resteraunt - 4 star hotel, so fine dining. Not outrageously priced and good quality food.

Danish Kitchen - a nice little cafe. Good for a quick lunch

Bettys Tea room - expensive, but decent food. Good for the experience if nothing else

York Hogroast - a takeaway place that does FAAAANTAASSTIC rolls filled with sliced roasted meats.

Evil Eye/Bora Bora - cocktail bars. Gotta love a tasty cocktail!

Places that have been recommended and added to my list of possible places to go:

Rustique
The Olive Tree
The Blue Bicycle
Cafe 8
The Biltmore Bar & Grill
Nineteen
The Living Room
Bobo Lobo
El Gaucho's
Asia Gourmet
Yo! Sushi
Viceroy of India
Red Chilli
Hotel du Vin

PLACES TO BE AVOIDED!

The Slug and Lettuce
Loch Fyne
Russell's
Meltons

I'll be there for 9 days, starting May 13th, so I have plenty of opportunities to try a lot of places. If possible I'd like to be able to try somewhere new for every lunch and dinner, and maybe even the occasional breakfast, though I'll likely eat breakfast in the hotel most mornings. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :) :D

Rustique is absolutely excellent and do a discounted lunchtime menu.

The Olive Tree is also meant to be excellent.

Both look good. Will definetely add them to my list of places to possibly go :)

Evil Eye, as you said, is good. They have lovely food too.

Café Concerto is a must when I go (for lunch)

Only had a drink in Evil Eye. There food does look good though, so I think I'll give that a go. Not heard of Cafe Concerto. Will keep my eyes open for it.

Does anyone know if the Loch Fyne seafood resteraunt is any good? I've passed it, but never went inside.

Loving the suggestions so far! Keep em coming :D

What about The Slug and Lettuce? Thats another place I've passed, but never been into. Their menu online looks very appealing.

As for chain places don't got to them in York , you really are spoilt for places to eat , leave the chain type places for another day.

I've said it before, but where I live theres a shocking lack of places for eating. Theres like two or three decent resteraunts in the local area that are good for eating and a bunch of subpar places.

Even a half decent chain resteraunt would be a treat for me :p

Do you not live near Glasgow, or am I thinking of someone else entirely?

I live about an hour away from Glasgow, so not too far away really. And I get what your saying. I will be avoiding most chain places. I certainly wouldn't go to somewhere like Pizza Hut/Pizza Express/Nando's/Subway while I'm there as I can get access to places like that closer to home. But there are a couple of chain places (Cafe Rouge and GBK) that I probably will go to because I know that I like them.

Remember I'm going to be there from the 13th till the 22nd! Thats a lot of different dinners and lunches. I dont need to eat at a independant place every single meal. The occasional chain place is fine IMO :p

I fully intend to explore the city and find places that have not been mentioned here for eating. But this thread does give me some ideas for places to look out for and places to stay away from. And no I'm not a critic or blogger. Just a hungry tourist :D

Can anyone recommend Nineteen or The Biltmore Bar & Grill? Or shall I avoid them?

Still looking for more places to go. Anyone know if Russells is any good? I've walked past it numerous times, but never been inside. Their menu isn't anything amazing to look at, but I see they do a carvery service. Wondered if it was worth a go or not?

Or the Barbakan cafe/deli? That looks pretty interesting. Any good? :)

Has anyone mentioned Hotel du Vin?

Nobody has mentioned that one before. Looks interesting. I'd be curious to try the caviar. Never actually tried that before, or been to a resteraunt that even served it.

Pity about Russell's. There menu was a bit boring looking anyway, but I thought maybe the carvery might have made up for it.

El Gaucho's is worth a look - good steak!

Looks good. I'll add it to the list. At this rate I'm gonna end up with more places to go than I'll have time to actually go to :D

Speaking of which. Can anyone recommend Meltons or The Living Room?

EDIT: Or Bobo Lobo? That looks like another good cocktail bar that also does food :D

I dont really go to pubs as a rule, unless they serve good food, since I'm not much of a drinker. But I'll keep my eyes open for Indochine.

I hesitate to ask this, but does anyone know if Jamies Italian is any good? I didn't even know Jamie Oliver had a resteraunt in York.

Jamies Italian is available in York but I wouldn't :p I've been to the one in York and in Oxford (the original IIRC) and both have been poor. Best thing about them is the bread says it all really :p

When are you going again ?

Yeah I thought as much. I was very dubious about the place, but thought I'd double check. I go to York on the 13th. Not long now :)

^ Thank you :)

Hmmm. I better think about booking up a table somewhere for my first dinner on Monday. By the time I get into the hotel and unpacked, I probably wont be in the mood for a lot of walking around. Maybe I'll give The Olive Tree a call and see if I can get a table reserved. The lobster ravioli on their menu sounds goooooood :)

EDIT: Table at The Olive Tree has been booked for Monday evening. Thats one dinner sorted anyway :D
