Planet Earth II

Huge Attenborough fan.

Glad they didn't shy away from true nature. Amazing footage. Spectacular show.

DVD/Bluray up for preorder on the rainforest (release date 5th December).

No sign of a 4k bluray. I won't be getting a 4k TV until the middle of next year so no rush! :p

I had this hyped up a bit in my head, but it was actually better than I thought it would be :)

Felt sorry for the poor crab :(

Disappointed that there is no 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray as that would have been icing on the cake. I'll wait and see if they release one.

I would be happy to see Dr Alice Roberts take over his mantle

though I suspect this is would only be to see her in sweaty jungle clothing..so maybe for the wrong reasons

Awesome tv, them racer snakes though....

They were quite scary.

We were all screaming at the TV when the little ones were running away, and then cheering when they got free.

One thing i can't understand, and i guess it's just nature - they said snakes don't have a very good eyesight but are very good at sensing movement. When those little ones come out of the sand, surely your instinct is to run, instead some of them do lie still almost as if they know the snake can't see them. How would they know that though.

There was also quite a sad moment with the birds, one went away i presume to get food, and another bird pecked at the egg for food - you could see the insides of the egg running out and down the tree, yet the mother bird still came back to incubate it - obviously not knowing that the egg is no longer any good.

Then was in a bit of shock at the end with the penguins trying to get back on the rocks, some of them ending up with broken legs etc, and one was almost completely stained in blood.

Some purely amazing things captured though.

Thought it was absolutely fantastic. The camera work was truly stunning, some of those shots like the monkeys swinging through the trees and the lizard/snake escapades were some of the best nature shots ever imo.

Those penguins lives are brutal.

Ridiculously good television. I still think 'The Hunt' is the new benchmark for Documentaries and I thoroughly recommend you all go out and buy the Blu-Ray if you haven't seen it already. But if the rest of the episodes are as consistently entertaining and informative as last nights, I think there'll be a new king.

Evolution doesn't really work like that. You can't pass on 'aquired' characteristics as such, so I assume whatever particular gene for standing still when under threat has survived and been passed on through the generations. It's not so much a case of it 'knowing', it's more instinctual.

You should check out 'The Hunt' if you haven't already. Literally all about predator and pray. Some of the bravest editing I think there's ever been in a mainstream documentary in regards to when it decides to/not to cut.

Yes that what surprises me, to most animals and even humans, if you sense danger your instinct is to run.

It depends though doesn't it. Most animals lack the general intelligence to actually make a fight or flight decision whereas humans can quickly evaluate any given situation and weigh the pro's of escape against the cons of standing there ground.

With most animals almost everything is instinctual, they don't necessarily contemplate in the same way we do. They go off the instinctual traits of there ancestors in a much more bare bones fashion then we do. The fact they do actually stay totally still is a testament to the fact that particular tactic HAS and DOES work.

Brilliant episode. Though I'm not sure who has a more raw deal. The lizards had a pretty brutal first hour of life (like the little guy who pops his head out just to see a fellow lizard being eaten inches away!) or the penguins who have to deal with those waves.

Can't wait for next weeks.

This isn't true plenty of humans just freeze, just like rabbits
And a fair fee animals play dead even better.
Its a successful strategy and hence hardwired into the brains through genes

Just watching it know. Sloths are amazing.

And some just run in a straight line in front of the danger, i.e sheep and also my mum yesterday who nearly got run over and just ran in the direction the car was travelling
