Hi guys

As the title suggests I am planning to take the plunge and build my own pc later this autumn. Having read up on the forums (so much knowledge and good advice her by the way);) I am currently looking at a build around an intel i5 3570k with one of the 7850 cards inside, a suitable motherboard and 8gig of ram to utilise 64 bit windows seven (already owned). Most of my current system undoubtedly needs an upgrade but I would really appreciate some advice on a couple of components that I am wondering if I can keep?

I have a 500w OCZ sxs2 psu. Will this be ok to run the 7850 and i5? I will hopefully have an ssd in the new system and a hdd. I have no immediate plans to overclock although I may in the future

I have a couple of 500g hard drives, a barracuda 7200 and a Samsung 7200. Both appear to have 16mb cache. They would be used predominantly for data, photos etc as I hope to have an ssd big enough to install windows, some games and ms office would these be ok? My understanding is they wouldn't bottle neck it if the ssd is the boot drive? Or would I better to buy a new one?

I have a Samsung DVD rewriter which I am pretty sure is sata (model sh-s203D). I don't really use it much other than for installing and importing data. I am guessing I could reuse this?

My main gaming currently is on wow which I really want to play on high or better settings all round. I play on a 22 inch at 1650x1080 which i won't be changing. I would like to play some bf3 etc on good ish settings but my main focus is to build something which will not be outdated to quickly ( I normally upgrade every 4-5 years with a gpu upgrade after 2 years)

I would really appreciate any advice on those components that may be reusable, particularly the psu as 60 quid saved there is another 60 quid on a bigger ssd. I will be asking advice on particular components in the next month or so for a build in November when I have the money to buy the components.

Thanks

Chris

ur old parts are good
gaming at lower res you might want to go for cpu overclock
id recommend start with a case and big air cooler^^

The PSU will be fine for powering a 7850 and a 3570K.

The 500Gb HDDs will not have any effect on the speed of the SSD, just use them as data drives for storing photos ect.

As long as the DVD drive is SATA then it can be reused.

See the benchmark below for BF3 at 1650 x 1050 with a 7850, you should have no problems. With the extra saved from the PSU maybe consider going for a 7870 or even a GTX 660.

Other than that it would be best to wait until you want to buy before going into anymore detail on specs as prices are likely to change before now and November.

Thanks for advice, Am keen to get a new build together as am currently running a 4850 and Athlon x2 6000 which are starting to feel their age. Will post again come November with planned parts as you say no point at moment with prices changing weekly

Okay continuing this post i am now in a position to buy during the next week :D

Am looking at taking advantage of the offer on the i5 3570k this week.
I have decided on a GTX 660 of which the msi twin frozr is my choice unless anyone tells me its not a good idea.
Beyond that i really hope people can help me. I know i want 8 gig of ram, a Z77 board £80-£90 pound mark, no plans to SLi, but am unsure about gigabyte boards friend keeps telling me there have been a lot of failures in their motherboards of late??), a heatsink which will allow some modest cpu overclocks in the future and a SSD (again as large as possible)

I am really interested in the zalman z9 U3 case but unfortunately ocuk do not seem to stock it so i either go elsewhere or someone can suggest something similar i can get from ocuk.

For reference idleman kindly put the below together for me a couple of weeks ago as an idea but i am asking again before i order in case prices have changed and better offers are to be had and also would prefer to avoid gigabyte board if possible. any suggestions gratefully received :)

Any thoughts or suggestions or would i be better to start with a fresh post? Also if oc have items that are on offer but out of stock will they honour the price on orders even if when they come back in the price has gone back up? any help gratefully received :)

Thanks for rapid response stulid. Am happy with spec, only change I want to make is to an asus motherboard. Have been looking at the asus p8z77 m for a tenner more. Sorry to be a noob but will this be ok with rest of components? Rest of items are now in my basket and ready to go but just want to check am ok with that board? Thanks

It will, but why you want a small mATX board? do you want a smaller case then?

The Asus doesn't add anything special for its extra cost.

No I went for that one as it was in stock, the other asus board which is atx which I was looking at was the p8z77 lx is out of stock and I think I was being impatient!! Would that one be more suitable? I am perhaps being daft being stuck on an asus but I have heard some less than complementary things about gigabyte boards of late and the asus seem to have a good reputation. Thanks again for your help/advice :)

The only thing thats been moaned about with the D3H lately is that some people have needed to do a very simple BIOS update to get their GFX card to work, it's then been fine for them.

I just built a system for a friend with the D3H, i had bios ready on a usb stick. turned it on. jumped in bios. updated it straight away.

hes running a radeon HIS 7950 and has had no issues.

for sake of 5 mins effort defiantly worth it.
