Ok so, I'm planning my first build and just need some suggestions for hardware. System will be used primarily for streaming, gaming, P2P downloading etc.. The usual stuff! Anyway, so far I have picked out some components that I'd just like to run by you all to make sure I'm getting the best bang for buck or if there is anything else you would recommend instead of what I'm about to list. So...

CPU: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-539-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=567

BOARD: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-491-GI

RAM: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-178-KS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1387

GPU: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-344-AS&groupid=701&catid=1914

SSD: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-055-CR&groupid=701&catid=2104&subcat=2394

HDD: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-257-SE&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1279

OPTICAL DRIVE: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-155-SA&groupid=701&catid=10

That's my list so far, just need help choosing a PSU (Preferably modular) A case (With good cable management) and cooling.

Any suggestions on hardware would be great ? Ideally I'd like to get a bit cheaper but the same level of spec. Also any tips tricks or secrets for my first build will be appreciated muchly.

If you want this for gaming then the GFX card is not good enough at all.

What games do you play? what resolution is your monitor?

What is the total budget for this tower? did you need an OS?

-----------------------

For a start you can get the CPU+board cheaper with cheaper RAM.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£25 Saving** £393.98
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLRED316G2400HC11CDC01) £99.95
Total : £503.53 (includes shipping : £8.00).

At the moment NONE! I'm a console gamer making the move to the darkside! As of yet I don't have a monitor. Total budget I'd like to keep around £800 without peripherals. Well that's a great start, saving me about £25 already on that CPU, board and RAM bundle.

To be honest I think you should go for an i5 and 8Gb of RAM to free up money for a much better gfx card that can play modern titles at 1080 res with decent settings,

A 270X which is bgrade (used/unwanted item), its better than that GTX740 you picked.

I think I would like to stick with the i7 but maybe you're right with the RAM. Could always upgrade that in the future I suppose! I really want to try this myself but a bit worried when its so much money... What to OC charge to do it for you ?

Thanks a lot for the swift suggestions by the way, much appreciated :)

What would I lose out on, going for the i5 instead of the 7? And I don't think I need something quite as specy as that for the gpu as it's only to be used casually! And I need a hdd. I have a NAS but it's a couple years old and I don't trust it as a permenant solution lol.

I7 give you hyperthreading (so eight threads instead of four) and a clock speed difference as the 4790K is 4Ghz base.

Is it something I'd see a noticeable difference in? Also what about the options for AMD? I've always jumped straight to Intel. When I asked my mate about it who builds quite a lot hos reply was "AMD is for pu**ies" but a sensible reply on here would be lovely
