Hi all,

I have never so much as tried to tweak a clock setting before, but I'm considering a little mild OCing on my two-year-old i7 920.

My setup is as follows:

Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366)
EVGA GeForce GTX 260 896MB GDDR3
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3
Corsair XMS3 3GB (3x1GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Triple Channel
Audigy 2 ZS
Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply
Akasa AK-967 Nero Direct Contact Heatpipe CPU Cooler

However, I am intending to install 6GB of RAM plus a GTX 480 before I do this.

I am a complete and utter noob and BIOS settings scare me ****less. I'm not looking for ridiculous speeds - I'd just like to get my 2.66GHz up to 3.4-ish with the absolute minimum of fiddling around and the lowest possible chance of screwing up!

I have looked at various guides online and they are all very complicated and in-depth (and scare me further).

How simple is it possible to make this?

If you're unwilling to learn what any of the things in the bios mean, I'm not sure what you're hoping we can do for you. Your spec should be comfortably capable of 3.6ghz, but you're going to have to learn what stability testing is, and preferably what some of the voltages refer to.

The main points to look at are the BCLK, multipliers (both CPU and RAM), the CPU voltage, RAM voltage and QPI voltage. There are dedicated X58 i7 overclocking guides out there, so I'd suggest you read a couple - even those in the original reviews. Also, read your mobo's manual (the BIOS pages) to get familiar with the layout and what each thing does. Some can be quite vague though, hence why it's best to read a guide as well. Something that can be done while on the bog to be honest... :D

It's not so much that I'm unwilling to learn (or necessarily unaware) of what the BIOS settings all do, more that I'm more than a little confused. I have read 3 or 4 guides and none of them seems to be recommending exactly the same thing. At the end of the day I'm just scared of wrecking my hardware.

I appreciate I am probably coming across as more than a bit of a pussy.
