Just wondering if there are any plans for OcUK to implement PMs?

I just saw in the FAQ that the reason is "excess load on the server" but surely thats something that was written a long time ago as this can't really be an issue with the servers that OcUK is hosted on these days? After all there are much bigger forums around that run PMs with no issue

Just wondering thats all :) - The trust-email thing used to be decent but even that comes from a no-reply address now and is a bit of a PITA for the MM etc...

Any plans?

I don't think the forum needs it, it would probably reduce some of the post counts too, thus making the forum appear a bit less active than it does now.

I'll await various gags based on the "hamsters" that run OCUK servers which apparently provides great humour.

There was probably a time when the forums were so slow that PM's would be the straw that broke them but now I'd suggest controlling competitor linking is the primary concern.

Fundamentally the forums are funded by a computer reseller, as such there are rules stopping people linking to competitors, PMs would be used to get around that and as PMs actually detract from the community as a whole (reduces public content) it's really a lose lose for OcUK.

Of course Spie may decide completely different and turn PMs on this afternoon, I know nothing :)

people could just use trust anyway if they wanted to do that

I wouldn't have thought its the competitor thing since you could just email someone should you wish...

Dunno, I just like PMs sometimes... I use them on other forums for stuff that is not so much private but just for topics that are only relevant to me and the person I'm talking to.

Builds relationships too between members and tightens everything up I reckon :)

Maybe the bosses just like to see everything thats said, it would make sense as to why they changed the trust email system to come from them rather than email -> email?

Not really a big deal either way tbh, I was just curious (but I do think the option should be there, otherwise its all a bit big-brother)

Of course they could, and they likely already do, but as the forums are run by a shop, why should they provide easier ways of exchanging competitor links? It's a rule I actually agree with for that reason alone.

yes but the point is if they want to exchange links then they will, PMs would only make that one thing a bit easier but open up many other positive avenues...

I think OcUK have such a solid name that competitors links shouldn't make much difference anyway, they're a great company and people are perfectly aware that there are alternative places to buy but they still stick with OcUK...

In fact, if they allowed the discussion of competitor stuff openly if would cement them at the top of the pile :) - its the whole thing about not worrying about your competitors but make them worry about you ;)

Do you think an official Ferrari forum would give a crap if its members were discussing Renault Clios :p

How would enabling PMs mean that it is less likely or less easy to see everything that is said? I don't actually know if it is possible for the emails sent via Trust to be viewed by Admins or Moderators but even supposing it is you'd be somewhat paranoid and egotistical to think that you're being watched - I somehow doubt that most care all that much about the individual missives sent.

I'll go out on a limb and say hell would freeze over before that happened!

I think that's a fairly strong bough you are on there.

As for the PM issue, I don't see it as a great problem, the forums have managed perfectly well for 8 odd years in this incarnation without them so it presumably isn't that vital.
