Plantronics DSP-500 headphone problems

I have just purchased some Plantronics DSP-500 USB headphones and for the life of me can't get the inline volume control to work.I have installed the Persona software and still have the problem although the mute button works fine,i have also checked the headphones filmware and i have the latest version.Please help as i'm starting to pull my hair out

My advice - return them if you still can!
Plantronics stuff disintegrates after about 1 month of use (if not immediatly) IME.
