Plantronics Gamecon 780 structural failure.

Hi,

I've had my Plantronics Gamecon 780 headset since sept 2012.

Been very happy with them until today...

They don't get used everyday and I never abuse my kit, but putting them on this morning the left side of the headset band failed.

I have raised a warranty claim with plantronics but that will take time to know if I have a possible chance to get a replacement.

Suffice to say I thought there may be a metal band under the plastic but no, the headband is all plastic and looking at the other side, there are white stress marks in the plastic.

I suppose you get what you pay for...
 
I had a similar problem with my gamecom 780, snapped at the top headband.

Plantronics were excellent in terms of a return, they paid for a courier to pick it up and I had a replacement within three days.
 
Mine and several others' 780 headsets have all done the same, usually around the 8 month point.
Bit of a shame, as the sound is quite good for such a cheap unit.

I just wrote them off and went for Corsair Vengeance 1500s instead. Sound is just as good and far less raw, but the build quality is vastly superior and you can do a lot more with the driver/config software.
 
I will have to wait and see what plantronics say.

In the meantime I have been out this morning and have picked up a temporary pair of headphones just to tide me over for now.

I've got the same Plantronics and have had them about 6 months so far, I have very slight white marks in the same location as the OP, but not to the extent he has. Hope Plantronics get back to you mate and get it all sorted out. I really like the headset and it'd be a shame if mine go the same way yours did :-(
 
Wasn't a fan of this version of them (the older model was a LOT more robust looking).

The turtle beach are ok (had the same pair). Consider if you switch something from Sennheiser. I have the PC330's and they are exceptionally good for the price (but not fully over-ear cup, it bothers me less than I thought it would).
 
Oh God I remember having that Turtle Beach headset. The sound quality was amazing but the build quality was really flimsy and cheap, i'd say worse than the Plantronics.

Do what I did. Go on eBay and get a pair of Siberia V2's for like £19 delivered. Best headset i've ever had.
 
Or avoid headsets entirely for that exact reason. They are utter crap - build quality and sound quality is both substantially lacking compared to normal headphones. Have a look in Sound City, there is a sticky and tonnes of threads there that will point you to actually half-decent headphones - such as Koss PortaPros, HTF600s, DT770s etc, depending on your budget.
 
Cookeh some people like the convenience and form factor of a headset. Just please for the love of god get over it before you give yourself an aneurism harping on in literally every single headset thread.

2 threads in this subforum equates to literally every? You need to look up some definitions dude, that is a simply moronic statement.
The convenience/form factor statement is a non-argument - in many cases a proper set of headphones+standalone mic will have a smaller footprint, and be lighter than a headset, ergo more convenient, a better form factor and easier to store. Before you raise the second cable pointer, you can wrap or shorten the cable on the mic in about 5 seconds flat whereby you cease to notice it - admittedly you will end up with two jacks to plug in, but thats the same as with any non-USB headset.
There is simply no need or any real reasoning to buy a gaming headset when you can get better sound, better build quality and better audio recording for less money - the very suggestion is nonsensical. I would be far more inclined to say that the reason gaming headsets are popular is not at all related to convenience, more that people simply aren't as confident in choosing headphones due to a greater variety of options with styles, soundstages, response etc and are either too lazy to do research of don't know where to look - thankfully, there are several excellent beginner resources available to them (such as the one I pointed at) before you strolled in with your idiocy.
 
Have you heard anything back from Plantronics about your headset? I wondered what the out come of this would be, as I said before I've got the same headset and it'd be good to know what would happen if my headset was to break in the same way.
 
Had my 780's about a year now but its rare they have any use to be honest. Please keep us up to date here really on what the outcome is if possible? Always nice if they would be covered if the worst happened
 
TBH, given how many counts of failure I've seen, mostly after the same time period and all at the same point on the headband, I'd personally write off the £45-odd these cost and start looking for replacement ones - There are a couple of very decent gaming headsets out there around the same price bracket, or there's the audiophile stuff listed in Psycho Sonny's sticky over in the Sound City thread.
