Plasma better than LCD right?

LCD now pwns Plasma.

In what way?

LCD is cheaper, that's the only advantage it has.

Admittedly it's a pretty good advantage to have since people look at a £500 LCD and a £500 Plasma and think the LCD is the shizzle.

However, out of the top 10 flat panels screens above 37" currently available I would say that 8 were Plasma, certainly all of the top 5.

This must have made OCUK loose a lot of custom.

oh the ironing lol

plasma's are better than lcd's. its just the truth. sure people with their uber expensive lcd's will try to justify the price of them, but if you want the best picture is plasma. thats not to say they dont have their shortfalls, namely:

*the possibility of screen-burn
*the need to spend a LOT on a 1080p panel
*picky about placement near sources of heat

...but, the benefits far outweigh the flaws of plasma sets. make no mistake, the biggest flaw of all lcd's today is their inability to resolve detail at the black end of the spectrum. i dont care what lcd lovers like to think, they are just no good at it.

+1

There are a lot of LCD fanboys here, but that is expected as this is a haven for pc modders, gamers etc, for which an LCD might be better because of frequent static images. But PQ wise LCDs just can't compete with plasmas, just like james said, especially in the black end of the spectrum. In my view LCD tvs look unrealistic, with the colours being far too vibrant and almost orange skin tones, or the opposite end of the spectrum with a dead, cold looking picture.

One other problem of plasmas is their reflective screen (ala CRT), but that can easily be solved by not putting it facing a window or just closing the blinds/curtains. But overall with a tv what should be the main reason to actually get a tv...... Well, the PQ that you will see day in and day out, rather than niggling over 1080p vs 720p at 12ft etc etc.

What I always try to put across is that a well setup plasma display 720p (kuro or panasonic PX) will show up any samsung 1080p LCD or other LCD tv. But you should all test tvs out yourself and please for the love of god do not believe the picture in store, please go to avforums and find the relevant owners thread for the set you want to see, print off a well regarded set of settings, then configure the set in the shop with these.

I am confused. Majority of people in this thread have said LCD are better than plasma. I currently have a 32" Samsung LCD, which I feel is now too small. Looking to upgrade to a 50" Plasma. It was my understanding that plasma is much better at this size, blacks are black, whites are white etc.

Is this wrong?

I use my 360 a lot, would Plasma be rubbish for that?

LCD's are said to be better for gaming, whereas Plasmas are good for all purpose SD and HD stuff. The LCD would also be a lot cheaper for 50" than a Plasma would. Also at that size you would want 1080p and Plasmas currently cost a good bit for a 1080p one.

Having done a lot of reading I am not convinced I need a 1080p set at this time.

1 - I am on Virgin, not a great deal of HD channels at this time
2 - I don't plan to own a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD player anytime soon
3 - 360, currently there aren't many that support 1080p, and when they do I don't think I will be that bothered. Ignorance is bliss and all that!

Like I said before a lot of gamers and pc users on here so you will naturally get a lot of praise for LCD, but you have done you research well, Plasma 50 is a good one to aspire to.

Even on a 50inch 1080p isn't really needed unless you want to futureproof and sit closer than 7-8ft to the set. A good set to aspire to would be the new panasonic PZ85 50inch. Itl be 1080p and Im not totally sure of the price of the new range, but 1300ish should cover it.

But I would advise you to pickup a PS3 as soon as possible even though you said you won't get one. Blu ray is the winner of the format war and here to stay, plus the dvd upscaling of the PS3 is simply excellent.Andmost importantly you will be missing out on feeding your HD tv, HD goodness. :)

Thanks for the info mate. I am not big at buying, or collecting DVDs though. THe only ones I buy are comedy TV series (Alan Partridge, The Office, Peep Show, Family Guy etc.) and animated films (Over the Hedge, Monsters Inc. etc)

I generally don't buy action films as I wouldn't really watch them more than once :) as much as I love them!

Comedy has a certain replayability about it :)

I'll look into that Panasonic. However I might be moving soon, so will wait to see how much space I have in the new place to decide if a 50" is worth it :D (I hope it is)

I would like 50" by the time GTA IV is out

Burn in and plasma lifespan just put me off them.

At my current viewing rate it will take me about 41 years to reach my screen's halflife.

Burn in isn't really an issue any more. With the previous and current gen screens it takes an awful lot to cause any retention and it can fixed quickly and easily with a detuned signal.

I've left mine on the Sky menu overnight before and it's not caused the remotest hint of burn.

Another vote for the Pioneer Kuro. I work for an independent retailer that sells/installs various makes of Plasma and LCD and the Pioneer Kuro is easily the best to my eye.

I fitted a PDPLX508D the other day and wanted to show a picture to the customer. His Sky hi def had not yet been installed so he went upstairs to fetch a DVD player just to test the screen. When I saw the player my heart sank. It was a cheap and nasty old Bush with a "reconditioned" sticker on it. I thought to myself this is not going to do this screen any favours.

He put on Revenge of the Sith and I was stunned at how good it looked. That Pioneer had taken whatever kind of signal that Bush was putting out of its scart socket and wrestled it into a very fine picture.

to be honest if your only using it for the 360 and no other HD stuff, i wouldn't get such a big and expensive TV. LCD does better for gaming, which seems to be the main thing your going to use it for.
