Plasma better than LCD right?

Well thanks for the advice guys, I will try turning the brightness and the contrast down a notch and see how it goes. I would say its more image retention then screen burn.

Here you go mate, I've just been reading this:

For what it's worth, in relation to LCD vs Plasma I was going to buy a Panasonic TH42PZ70B Plasma but after reading the
reviews on that site and adding heavy gaming into the mix I'm probably going to get the Samsung LE40M87BD 40in LCD

For HD and gaming, LCD all the way tbh, you won't regret it. Thanks for the link too mate.

I do.

Sometimes think plasma would have been better for giving more detail on fast panning rather than a slight blur that can make all the difference and theres always the issue of LCD input lag. Its not quite as clear cut as I once thought.

Poor choice, the panasonic will be a far better purchase. Don't worry about screenburn, i tried out gaming on the pana PZ and poineer kuro and both were better for it than the LCDs i tried. PLus coupled with much better PQ, especially for SD footage, it's a no brianer.

I was all set to get LCD, all the fanboys screaming about Plasma life, screen burn, etc.

Then I saw the Panny TH37PX70, and was converted. Bit of research on the internet shows that all the above mentioned are no longer an issue.

PX80 came out recently, been getting rave reviews and in the group test I read recently it got rated top of all the budget 37" screens, both LCD and Plasma.

Hoping to order very soon...

Ive got to ask - who uses a Plasma as their main display for PC usage? Just cant see past screen burn especially when using it for desktop usage...

ps3ud0

Playing a lot of games I've never noticed any screenburn on my Kuro. It does have an orbiter which helps. Not sure if other manufacturers have something similar.

I don't think I would use it for longterm desktop usage though.

Very good point here, and this is the only real reason an LCD should be chosen over a plasma, if it will see a lot of use as a monitor. Other than this there are no reasons that an LCD purchase would ever be on the cards for myself, or should be for anyone else. Well, there is a little point of LCDs having less reflections on the screen, but it really is a minor advantage. A good plasma really does knock the socks off any comparable LCD tv.

Same here, but I don't even think the orbiter on mine is turned on.

One mans meat etc...

I've tried both, they are both fine screens and only the super critical would notice the difference but it's widely accepted that LCD screens
handle PC & gaming better then plasma screens and that and power consumption is an important factor for me deciding on which screen to
buy. Neither of them are bogus and choosing either screen cannot sensibly be described as a poor choice. As it's impossible to test them at
home side by side I suppose I'll have to do what everyone else does. I'll buy the screen I feel is best for me at the time and 'make do' with
my choice. Whichever one I choose there will be a better one released the next day for half the price.

Will one day in the future be buying an LCD/Plasma, with a fixed budget of £500. Seeing as the majority of it will be TV shows, SDTV, and films, I think I will end up going plasma.

Step bro has a 42" 720p plasma upstairs, and he used it for PC use all the time, screen burned for a while but after running a colour cycle on it it went away..... not sure if that is normal.

Well I was umming and aaarrring over LCD and plasma for weeks.

I decided that I couldn't afford a decent plasma, the 37px80 was in my budget but have gone for the panny lcd 37lzd80. Mainly because the full 1080p and the fact that its going to be used for a lot of gaming (ps3, wii and pc) as well as blu-rays, DVD and dixv.

I would agree from what I have read, if you have £1200 buy a top notch panny plasma or pio kuro. But for me I want to avoid screen retention and the outside chance of permanent screen burn so I went LCD, as I feel atm it best meets my requirements for the inputs I intend to have on the TV.

EDIT: I dont claim to know a lot about screens but reading advice on plasma's on the internet has put me off plasma's for now. forum posts from new plasma owners saying they can see the setanta logo after 45 mins has put me off, one guy had image retention for a week. All that and having to run it in for 200 hours, constantly switching channels to avoid rentention has put me off.

oh and people getting green flares around blocks on cod4 during rapid scrolling also put me off.

I'm not saying the above is correct but thats what I have been reading/told. As I am spending a lot of money I dont wanna keep worrying about these issues.

EDIT 2: :) If i was just going to watch blu-ray and no console gaing, I would have got a plasma as by all acount the blacks and contrasts are great!

Im sure my 37lzd80 LCD wont let me down. I'll post a review on saturday!

Thanks for the info mate. I am not big at buying, or collecting DVDs though. THe only ones I buy are comedy TV series (Alan Partridge, The Office, Peep Show, Family Guy etc.) and animated films (Over the Hedge, Monsters Inc. etc)

I generally don't buy action films as I wouldn't really watch them more than once :) as much as I love them!

Comedy has a certain replayability about it :)

I'll look into that Panasonic. However I might be moving soon, so will wait to see how much space I have in the new place to decide if a 50" is worth it :D (I hope it is)

I would like 50" by the time GTA IV is out

Join an internet rental by post scheme I have, now I save £18 a pop on blu-ray films and simple rent upto 12 blu-ray films a month for £14.50!!!!

O dear, an extra £170 for a worse tv :(

Worrying about screeburn really is silly unless you leave static images on there for silly amounts of time. How hard is it to change channel or put the tv in standby after a while. Do you really leave setanta on for 5+ hours, or leave sky news/ bbc news on permanently whilst do other things.

I saw the lz and thought it was stupidly expensive, if you had gone for a sony LCD at the same price as the pana PX80 then fair enough, you want to game without having to think about anything playing on your mind, but LCDs still have noticable input lag, and thinking about green trails, phosphor trails etc, I have never ever seen a case of it on a plasma tv. Are you gooing to spend hours flicking through the same movement at a specific spot in a game just to try and find problems, or will you actually play the game and be soo engrossed that all you care about is enjoying yourself.

Sorry to be harsh, but bad bad choice, you could have got the PX80 and a number of films or games with the money you have saved, and had an awesome standard def picture, with a much better film experience thrown in as well.

O **** what have I got myself into :D

No really the panasonic LCDs are stupidly expensive for what they are. A well setup PX80 will look the dogs, I have only seen one next to the old PZ range and Kuro and it looked very very nice with *** standard definition tv feed. I fiddled with a few settings, but couldn't adjust the main picture settings and turn it off 'dynamic', but still good job panasonic.

Most important thing is to turn down contrast and brightness to the 40-60% areas, and change picture mode to cinema / move, OFF dynamic which only makes it bright and really increases the risk of retention/burn.

Il glady help you out a bit with setting if needed, but avforums is the place for that in the owners threads, and people who are much more knowledgable and own one will be of more use than me.

Nice choice btw :D
