So I've had my 42" Panasonic TH42PX70PED for about a 6 weeks now and have used it for watching DVDs on my PS3 and gaming on the 360.

Due to the lack of new games out on the 360 at the moment I am constantly playing Pro Evo 6 and Gears of War.

Due to playing PES so much I started to notice the score board in the top right hand corner begin to burn into my TV as well as the strategy marks and map from the game. I've had to turn these off now as I dont want it getting worse.
I have played a lot of GoW over the past week and again, burned images are starting to appear again.

So my brand spanking new TV's picture has all crappy marks all over it from Gears and PES :( I dread to think what will happen when I get Guitar Hero and Forza this month.

I wish I had gone LCD now bit style, I may consider getting a new LCD in the future if things get worse on the display.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Andy

can't you just display a bright white screen for a few minutes? I thought that got rid of all burn marks.

Yeah but apparently that reduces the lifetime of the TV dramatically. I've only had it 6 weeks! Will be **** if I have to keep doing this every month.

I'm yet to find the white screen function on the TV!

It's just image retention..I notice this on my Samsung Plasma, but it always goes away, honestly don't worry about it.

If you can find your white screen then that should wash away any retention you have, but please don't worry about it reducing the life span of your TV..your plasma has a life span of about 60,000 hours - that's over 6 years use at 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You could check your settings to make sure your brightness and contrast isn't set too high, and also check to see if your screen has a 'gaming' mode or a pixel shift function, either of these should reduce the retention problems you're having.

If you can hook a PC up to it just run notepad in full screen mode :)

If it's only 6 weeks old I would try to contact the retailer and arrange some sort of swap for LCD (if you can).

tbh screen retention and burning are inherent on all Plasma displays, some are worse than others but it is an inherent flaw in the technology. Anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves.

LCD's don't suffer from this, but they are not as bright as most plasmas, so there is a trade off.

Ok, thats reassuring, no doubt within 6 years I've upgraded the TV anyway! Maybe I should have read up on the facts before posting.

To be honest I only see the markss when a black screen is displayed as I sit too far away from the TV to see.

Rubbish.
I've had three plasmas over about 5 years and all of them got a lot of gaming use. Never once did I permanently burn an image into the screen, and that's including some marathon multiple-hour sessions.

There are pros and cons to LCD and Plasma, and having both I personally prefer the brighter colours and image, no ghosting and deeper blacks of a Plasma for gaming, especially as a 50" HD one can be bought for littler over a £1k now.

yeah, agreed, I've had my samsung for about 18 months now. It occasionally gets a spot of retention after a long game on something with fixed HUD, but its gone within a few minutes of watching nornmal TV.

Retention isnt a problem, and is not the same thing as screen burn, which modern plasmas, especially Panasonics, just dont suffer from unless they are display units with the same image 24/7.

Be glad you bought the plasma - much better all round entertainment device than an LCD (I bought an LCD first but couldnt live with the SD picture, which the plasma handles much better), and you dont get half the jaggies either :)

Had that very TV andy and while you get screen retention, its not actual burning.

Ive had 3 plasmas and never burned a permenant mark in any of them despite getting a lot of gaming play and sky watching with their logo's.

can only agree with most people and say dont fret TOO much.

retention != burn and will be flushed away with a bit of normally telly.

You got the best brand for little burn, pannys just... dont burn really.

Could be a good idea to check you have the brightness and contrast levels setup properly tho, and a lot of people run new plasmas at reduced settings for about 200hours or so, but again i wouldnt worry too much - aside fromt the retention you did the right thing buying a plasma.

Yes they do. Just to a far lesser extend.

Edit: Ah, my apologies. I thought you were on about image retention not screen burn :)

Did you run your TV in when you first bought it? With plasmas you should normally run them on a low contrast for the first 200 hours and then up them to normal levels.

Even after doing that I use conservative levels and am always careful what I leave on screen while I'm doing something else.

turn them down to avoid screen burn.

This is probably the issue, also, i have the PX60 and the frst thing recommended over at avforums is to take the set out of dynamic mode and put it into cinema,(Not sure if the PX70 has this, worth a look though) at least for the first 200 hours as this is the most likely period for image retention issues.

My 32" LCD has also suffered from image retention in the past, and a major contributing factor was having brightness/contrast set too high. It was actually at the default setting (dynamic) but changed to normal after noticing the retention. I have to shield my eyes when I turn it back to dynamic now it's so bright! :D

I have the same model Panasonic plasma since it was released. I got screen burn from the clocks on PGR3 and I thought I had ruined the tv. I also played a lot of MotoGP06 and thought the same thing. But play normal tv for a little while and it clears it. I only notice the burn now when I turn the tv off but when it cools down it is gone. I wouldn't worry at all about it. I purchased a home theatre system at the same time as the plasma and I was the first in Ireland to have both. Becuase if the burn the rep for Panasonic called to the house and reassured me that it was totally fine. I hope this helps.
