I've got metal and plastic plasterboard wall plugs and want to put up a shelf in a new build. Which ones should I use? I'm assuming the metal ones but wanted to check.

how big a shelf and what are you planning on putting on said shelf?
120cm x 20cm. It's a solid wood shelf. The brackets I have can hold 10kg each.
It'll be above the kitchen door just to hold odds and sods. Nothing of any significant weight.

It's one of those things I was always nervous about but it's a case of just do a bit of reading/watching and just go for it. Depends on how the walls are, experience tells you in the end. Best thing I learnt to do was fill holes properly then I tend not to worry about it anymore :p

Gripits aren't cheap but have got me out of a pinch a few times. Corefix ones I've found to be good as well. Plastic fixings of the right type are stronger than they look too, I've always found with metal ones I've ended up messing up getting them in more frequently.

Fischer duopower red (6mm drill bit) plugs and a 4 or 5mm screw are my standard go to for most applications that aren't extremely high load eg cantilevered tvs

Ive been thru a box of 100 since a year ago

When I was looking at mounting the TV on a solid brick wall, I did come across something called Corefix that's designed for plasterboard.

I used something similar to mount a breakfast bar to a wall this week, albeit I did manage to get some of it on a stud but they seemed more solid than anything else I'd tried.

Its designed for dot n dab plasterboard, not a true plasterboard fixing as all the load is transferred into the solid wall, same with rigifix which I prefer.

I've switched to these now myself after using metal inserts and those Screwfix ones that require a special drill bit previously.

This is why I'm terrible at DIY, as I would have used corefix without realising it was for dot n dab.

Ignore my suggestion :)
