Hi I have stripped all my wallpapers down recently I have decided against wallpapers or paper lining and will be using plastering my slightly iffy plasterboards or skimming I think its called.

I noticed gaps and tapes around all the corners of my walls since half the tapes came off, can I buy some plaster tape (fiber glass mesh type) and then use wicks multi finish plaster to give a top coat and then paint ?

I only ask since some youtube vids show one has to use a special plaster (mud?) with plastering tape to patch those corners and would like to avoid this if possible.

Ok, are you using plaster (the powder in the bag) or plasterboard (the big sheets stuff)? You're talking about both in your OP.

Hi plaster (powder in a bag) Thistle Multi Finish Plaster 25kg

Will be using this on my iffy and old plasterboards which are scratched and dented, have managed to pollyfilla the larger holes and smooth them over with sandblock but they are still iffy and wish to have a smooth finish, but as mentioned when I took the wallpaper down it took down half the tape around the corners and has left slight gaps.

You can use scrim tape to on corners and joins, remember you can go no more than 3mm deep with multi finish otherwise it will crack. Fill all holes with filler or joint compound first, then once dry cover with a good coat of pva. Plastering takes practice, it sounds like you haven't done it before so don't expect a perfect finish.

thanks for the advice guys, yeah first time with plastering although I have it a shot on a small part of the wall have watched the vids on wicks and youtube so gonna give it a go!

Its good to hear I can use that wicks tape in the corners since that is where it is showing more of a gap.

Is it really critical to use PVA on the plasterboards before using that wicks multi finish plaster ? What does it do anyhow

Seals the board to prevent it from sucking the moisture out of the wet plaster. Without doing this before plastering, the plaster you apply will likely crack/drop off or dry before you have any chance to smooth it.

If you've never plastered before, and you're doing a large area, I can recommend purchase of a vacuum drywall sander. I'm a pretty accomplished diyer, but plastering is one of those things that usually takes a lot of practise before you're any good. A vacuum sander is a must IMO.

thanks appreciate the advice especially about the PVA otherwise would have gone right ahead without it !

I am new to plastering but did give it a bash in a small area and think its doable I am not trying to reach good levels even ok is better then what I have! but yeah can tell it will require some patience and plenty testing.

I was considering doing the entire house but I may just limit it to 1 room since this particular room has worse plasterboards and 100+ holes and nicks and naks and overall damage.

The rest of the house the boards are generally good so may just paint them with some watered down Magnolia 2 coats and then a decent full coat on top will see may give plastering a bash on one small patch first and take it from there.

That sander looks slightly better then the one I got from Poundworld :p

If you have some help it makes the job a lot easier. One can do the mixing and cleaning. This is a big part of plastering. You need to have clean buckets and tools. Your aiming to get the plaster on a 2m x 3m wall in about 5-10 minutes anything longer than that and it will start going off. Time is the big player here you need to be quick. I'm not a spread but do all my own plastering, just takes practice. Good luck.
