With all the news lately that the oceans are literally full of plastic, I'm finding it hard to believe that this has crept up on the scientific community. I think it's safe to assume this hasn't happened overnight so why are we only finding out recently? It all seems rather odd.

What moral crusade? The crusade to keep going but charge consumers for the problem? That's not an ideology dripping in morals.

You're right of course, I'm not expecting much in the immediate future but I think something fundamental has to change to solve the problem. I work in the corrugated packaging industry and the decision by China to stop taking waste is shaking up the industry, especially for those who use PET as part of the process.
