Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

On my lunch run I jumped off a wooden stile and landed on a huge thorn that went through my shoe and into my foot *puke smiley*

Had to take the laces out, pull my foot off and then borrow some pliers to pull the thorn out of the shoe before flagging a lift back to the office

So much for running the rest of the week!

OUCH:eek:

I've been enjoy some great runs with weather is a little cooler. Leaves are changing and I've enjoyed some great trial runs in the local park.

I used it today to purchase some new shoes so it's confirmed working. If you do collect from shop instead of delivery you get a £5 voucher to use in store which negates the £5 postage.

Thank you very much sir, was just in need of grabbing a new pair of shoes myself.

Bah, wasn't feeling particularly strong this morning but managed to force myself to get out for a 5K sub-18 attempt.

Didn't have it in me, only managed 18:05.

Still a damn fast time:eek:. You definitely have the speed for sub-3 marathon so if i was you I would concentrate on endurance training so you can achieve a strong finish.

After a week of cycling to work as my missus needed my car I'm going to duck out of the 1/2 I had planned for tomorrow, just feeling quite tired and sore legs and chances are I'll need to cycle again Monday/most of the week again.

Shame but still very happy with what I've achieved this year with new PB's at 5k, 10k and 1/2. Next year I shall be targeting that sub 1:30, most likely at Reading as it's such a flat course.

I'm still ahead of schedule for 1200 miles this year too :)

Why bit simply treat it as a fun training run, ignore any time goals and just try and enjoy the atmosphere and post race party. Plus you nrver know how you will perform.

Assuming of course it is paid for and non refundable.

I'm looking for a bit of a advice/guidance on what to wear while running now the weather is getting colder.

At present I'm wearing a pair of Skins compression shorts (which I got to prevent thigh chaffing), and a pair of long shorts over those, and a tshirt.

I've got myself a sleeveless baselayer - I wanted sleeveless as I wear a phone holder on my upper arm under my tshirt and would probably find an extra layer under the phone holder annoying. I use the baselayer when I went out Saturday morning and yesterday afternoon and both times I didn't really feel the cold as I was running but noticed that once I'd stopped, the baselayer was quite damp and giving me a cold back...

I did wonder if the tshirt I wear over the top being quite big meant it didn't draw sweat away from the baselayer leaving it damp and if a smaller tshirt might help it dry out and leave me warmer?

Finally finished C25k and did my first full 5k run at 29:46. Bought some nice Brooks at the weekend too after gait analysis etc. Not cheap though but hey.

First park run up in Liverpool this weekend as I'm away to see family and didn't want to wait.

Don't overdress is the main thing, you don't want to be sweating when its cold. Better of being slightly to cool and dry , than warm and wet (unless you can easily and quickly get changed). Dress for the temperatures towards the end of your run as well. This will mean the fist 15 minutes or so is a little on the nippy side until you warm up.

I wear nike compression tights hen its really cold otherwise I stick to plain running shorts, sometimes compress for a longer run or track workout. Then it depends how cold it is but I like to wear a T-Short and then some arm warmers and gloves. If it warms up unexpectedly then the arm warmers can be taken off. If it is liekly remain cold then I'll wear a long sleeve running shirt

This is the problem I'm wondering about, I felt dry but my baselayer top worked nicely at getting the sweat away from my skin but it stayed damp so I had to remove it after my run or I'd have gotten really cold...

What sort of arm warmers and gloves do you use? I've been contemplating gloves as since losing a lot of weight this year it seems I get very cold hands now... lol

Anything like this for arm warmers
https://www.amazon.com/ASICS-Thermal-Sleeves-Small-Medium/dp/B00U3L5E3E/
for races I get an old pair of hiking/thick sock and cot a whole in the toes. That way I throw them out after a few miles.

Gloves is any soft shell polyester stretch gloves, normally buy them form Costco or amazon. Anything like this:

I don't ever use layers when running, it never gets cold enough given the exertion level. I run in temperatures down to -7* just in my running tights and a thicker long sleeve. I add some underwear when cold to keep my balls warmer...

One idea for winter running is to make loops around your house/workplace, yo can start off with extra layers and then just drop them off as you warm up. This is especially useful for a 3 hour long run where it might be -5*C at 7am but 10*C at 9am over here.

Recommendations on tights? For some reason the cold is hitting me much more than usual so need some tights as well as a long sleeve running top.

My new asic's arrived today, its the newer cumulus gel 18 over the 17's I had before but quite surprised at the improvements made (full mess at front now so more "give, and interior feels much smoother/slicker), feel pretty good so hoping the first run in them goes smoothly.

Cheers, I'll look into the gloves I think, my arms tend not to be too bad as I generally wear long sweat bands on my wrists .

I'm going to see how it goes with the baselayer I think, it was ok while I was actually running on Saturday morning when it was about 4degrees or so, and I'm not going to be doing long runs, I'm going to stick to just 5k runs I think so won't need anything too major, maybe just a hoodie in the car if I'm running somewhere and not finishing at home.

Well done and I hope you enjoy the new trainers, it does make a difference to how good you feel when running and although it might be pricey if you look at it on a miles/hours per £ basis then they're probably not that bad.

I use some cheap Karrimor running tights from Sports Direct, I'm sure there are better options out there but they're functional.
