Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

So now I'm going to buy some proper running socks for next time, anyone recommend any or any to avoid?

If you've got a Decathlon locally then they do their own brand Kalenji running socks which are reasonably priced - I've got a couple of pairs of the Kiprun strap sock which seem quite comfortable for £6.99. My other main running socks are knee length Karrimor compression socks from Sports Direct, they're usually on a £12 for two deal and while I'm sure there are better socks out there I've tried some more expensive socks which don't work as well for me.

Got an 8 miler in tonight.

Was really struggling for the first 2 miles. It was a friends sons 1st birthday so we’d gone round and had a couple beers and lots of cake earlier in the day.

Once that had all worked through my system though I was alright. Only issue was the horrific cold and rain. Has left my legs and body in tatters!

Think I'm going to be making an appointment with my Doctor soon. I haven't been able to do any exercise for a good week now. Legs are just so sore ALL the time, particularly in the calves and just below the knees.

Thought it was DOMS for a few days but it's literally gotten no better over this pat week :(

Hopefully it went well. The first three minute running feels an age but, found the rest of the week to be ok.

Week 4 day 1 today. Hoping the 5 minute run goes ok!

I almost cried when the app said it was a 3 minute run :D

Managed it though, just seemed odd to do less distance today than on the last 2 weeks of running.

I think they point is to deload the amount you actually run but, increase the amount of time running in one go. Quite a smart program like that I've found.

That makes good sense actually.

I don't think i've run for 3 minutes solid for at least 10 years.

I don't think I ever have. Even as a child!

Ive also found it frustrating as I'm fitter from a cardiovascular point of view than the muscles in my legs. Feel I'm adjusting well to the pace now though.

Well I was early for football so went for a little run.

It was nice and flat (princess parkway) so ended up at what I hope will become my race pace to get me under 2 hours for the half marathon.

I was struggling at the end but then my legs were still recovering from yesterday’s 8 mile and I hadn’t really eaten much all day.

I think a big thing is to drop the extra 10kg I’ve put on over the last 12 months. That should help my pace a lot.

Too much work-life stuff got in the way last week so barely ran, then I came.down with the flu and have been in my bed since Friday. Going to the bathroom is exhausting.
Boston plans have now changed to fun run rather than race.

Managed to complete week 4 day 1 yesterday. Again pacing was a little too fast which I'll adjust for Wednesday run but, ultimately the run was quite comfortable.

Had been using Nike Dry Fit or X socks run speed one, the socks ~£7 last for several years and are pretty abrasive on feet(heels) and shoes(heel of shoe).

Are now trying these, about £2/pair ebay (they are artificial - no cotton, so should wick out) construction & feel seem OK so far.

What are the benefits or running socks?

My wife bought me a pair of Asics ones for christmas, and on the first run with my new trainers there was a lot of rubbing and my big toe nails ripped holes in each sock! Debating whether it's worth buying more (now i've cut my nails) or just use normal socks like usual.

@Daaaavvveee

How are you finding these?

I have some cheap Soundpeats wireless headphones which have just failed. They're comfy enough and sound fine.

Just wondering if something like this could be good.

Yeah i like them, i can wear them when running with people from work and still be able to talk to them etc, then when it comes to a hill turn it up and motor on up :D

I wear running socks, they have supposedly got more rigid sections (I think a bit like how the compression gear works), they last well, and ill keep buying them i think. Normally get mine from Amazon.

fairly tight on the foot so are like a 2nd skin, which takes the abrasion, so no blisters;
dont't get warm and they wick-out sweat/rain which is useful on longer runs.
last much longer than white cotton ones I originally bought, so more economic.

.... replacement, sorbothane, insoles are nice too !
