It could be causing the problem, the blister will be caused by rubbing somewhere anyway at least. And don't feel stupid, at least it'll be sorted. :)

Final long run before Manchester Marathon this morning. 22 miles, felt reasonably strong throughout and kept to the pace I wanted. Feeling prepared now.

Did want to do it last week so I could taper for three weeks but wasn't well so I did it today. Still two weeks to wind down which I'm happy with. :)

Fuggan, you're running Manchester aren't you? How's training been?

Yes Sir! Certainly am. I also did my last long run on Friday just gone of 33km. Felt the strongest one yet although would have liked to have got one 22+ miler in my training but stuck with the 20 mile. Think my average pace was about ten seconds slower than goal pace so think I'm on track.

Going to cut the mileage back a bit this week, been up around 60km the last few weeks so going to hit 45ish this week and then about 25km next week. Just in from a session up at the athletics track. 6x800m @ threshold pace w/400m recovery jog inbetween.

Training has gone pretty well to be honest. Missed a couple of long runs along the way and would have liked to have done more tempo work too. Makes me want to do another in the Autumn and properly nail every training session!

Hopefully get myself round in under 4 hours, though. How's your training gone?
 
P.s. welcoming tips on tapering - never done it before. After a bit of reading just generally seems like reduce mileage but keep the intensity of speed sessions there to keep feeling sharp...?
 
Main tip and mistake NOT to make with tapering is yes, reduce the miles of course, but don't take that as meaning reduced miles = nothing but easy slogging. Cut your miles shorter on your easy and steady runs, keep your sessions in place until race week of you are doing that work but keep the sessions short and sharp.

Closing to race weekend, on your easier runs add in some easyish strides but stretch them out. Just keep the pop in your legs, don't get that heavy not ran for 3 days feeling from the 4/5 mile overly easy slogs, they are a complete waste of time.

Anything you do 2 weeks out from a marathon is not going to benefit your performance, it is all about maintenance, keeping yourself fit and sharp and that pop in your legs. What is done is done now so don't get all lethargic and slow feeling by taking it TOO easy.

Complete novice and until 4 months ago the most running I'd done was the 100m at school, or playing tennis just after school.

Running the marathon for 2 great charities (Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation and Macmillan Cancer Care) in memory of my dad who passed away almost a year ago. Don't particularly enjoy running but I'll keep up the shorter runs probably.

Last long run prior to taper was yesterday but a sunday lunch and no dinner took its toll and after a 2hr40 13.1 miles ended my 21 mile run at just under 5 hours :(

Still, adrenaline and proper diet for London will hopefully keep my marathon time under 6 hours :)

Sweet, good to hear the training has gone fairly well for you. All the best for race day!!

My training has been as I wanted it to be other than missing a couple of long runs and having a rubbish week recently with illness, hence doing a two week taper rather than the three I planned but I'm better now.

Long runs I've managed a 19, 20, 20 and 22 so I'm confident in that respect and done a couple of track sessions and hilly runs too so piecing together nicely I hope.

And in terms of taper it's just what xdcx has mentioned really, reduce mileage but still keep them as decent enough sessions and not just run for the sake of it.
 
Mrs sent me a text when out for a run asking to pick up some cat food ....was suprised when I turned up without reading the text. Also told her in plain terms that going bloody shopping is not in my training plan.

Am I being too harsh ? She took it well...I just wonder if what seems obvious to me isn't to a non runner......

Not reading your texts whilst running is fine, and perfectly understandable. However if the shops are between the end of your run and home then popping in to pick up some cat food surely isn't that much of a burden?
 
Well, I did it! After a difficult 6 weeks of final training, which because of ITB issues meant I only managed 4 runs in that period, I completed the Paris Marathon in 5:05, knee issues cropped up just after 30km, stubbornness got me through the remainder, but by the gods am I paying for it now. Dreading what it will be like in the morning!
 
Taper going well so far. Did 9k last night with 3@m/p.

Weird one: This morning and today I've felt like my IT band is tight! :eek: surely this can't be the case, I foam rolled it last night extra hard so maybe it's just a bit of DOMS in the muscles round there... please?

Yesterday was interesting, this video sums it up!


Post Marathon +2, calves and quads a little tight but ok once moving but left foot below ankle quite painful, needed painkillers for that, seems to have settled now, actually quite surprised how good I feel two days afterwards!

Have been able to enjoy Paris at least!
