Absolute Annihilation, the main mod people play. Get the Spring version.

File Universe has more maps and mods and such.

About TA: Spring

You may have played Starcraft, or Warcraft, or Command and Conquer. This RTS is rather different. While the other games focus on careful control of individual units, TA is all about massive battles. Hundreds of units flying around. Giant nuclear explosions that can wipe out half your base in an instant. 100 foot tall robots with lasers, cannons, and rocket launchers taking on giant armies and winning. More unit types than you can count. Awesome action on a scale you might not have seen before. All this for free.

Getting started

The multiplayer lobby is basically IRC. If you haven't used IRC before, don't worry. It's just a chatroom. The first thing you should do is make yourself a login. Most of them should be happy to answer your questions and teach you how to play.

When you first jump in, the game can seem daunting. There are a million different units and buildings you could make. My best suggestion is to just hop in and start playing. Sure, you'll have no idea what's going on at first, but you'll learn quickly. There are some other options, though. The game lets you observe games. It also autosaves replays of any game you are in, and you can review these replays later on to see what you did and what your opponents did. You can learn a lot from replays.

Blame Spiking for these crappy screenshots. The screenshots in the previous thread may have been prettier, but I feel they didn't really reflect the perspective you spend most of the game in.

To be honest unless you played the full game you'd be lost, this is really just multiplayer for the old boys club.

Start with copying other players, you'll notice things. There are two key substances in the game.

Metal and Energy. You need to build metal plants on metal pools and energy collectors. Then you build vehicle plants, etc.
 
Just took a quick look.
Is this on a new engine? because it looks completely different, cartoony even.
No cool music either :(

Will be playing this online at some point though :)

TA: Played this game to the death years ago online, died off for me.
Started looking for ta2 then found in another post about Ta springs; located installed playing now very good game its a beta version when its over it will be for sale later on the year goto there website for the info, and WILL BUY IT once I test there first release, ps want them to get the AI right. Its cra at the moment.

Note: really enjoyed "past years" playing with group off friends over the network
also C&C over the internet :-)

the engine looks good in spring, plus i was just testing and i took over a peewee aka mechwarrior. :cool:

however, when hosting a game i cant get any AI to spawn or nething.
*** a i doing wrong, i ask and asked in the irc channel but nothing.
 
AI

Regarding the AI sometimes it can appear in the game whilst playing but I have noticed the comm has appeared and just stood there doing nothing. When it does start its crap AI so Just get online play a Human and beg them to be easy on you LOL. :D
 
AI is somewhat thick. I put the commander death thingie on "do not end game if destroyed" so the AI commander thinks its smart to go and trundle on into me where it D-Guns my commander and they both explode in nuclear fun. So I try changing the commander rule and still the eejit does it. :D


Edit: The AI has been updated and you can download it off the message boards and it is much improved, it learns how to play from experience of getting thrashed. Except that it has managed to thrash me 3 times in a row.


Also as a tip, try and get the advanced factories quickly, that means you can use T2 construction units to build fusion plants which give a tasty 3000 energy each.
