Quick question here.

Instead of using an ariel to get channels for play tv (as i get no signal) is it possible to use the sky+ ports that are on the wall in my room but unused at the moment? This may be an alternative to buying freesat.

No. Freesat and Freeview (PlayTV) are different.

PlayTV is essentially a digital TV tuner and software for recording that digital TV signal. You still need the freeview channels to use it.

Freesat requires a different box but can be used through a Sky sat dish with no subscription.

tbh if your thinking of play tv. think about it

by the time u have payed for playtv and a bigger hardrive. u may as well go and buy a proper pvr. i considered this buts its not worth it.
