Playing Anno 1701 again...

Got back to having another bash at Anno 1701, can someone remind me how to increase the number of settlers in the game?
I have 2500 pioneers and only 39 settlers, I have plenty of all supplies and am raking in the cash and they're all happy but I can't advance any more until the settler number increase to unlock the more advance technonolgies etc.

You have to get a certain type of thing they like, normally 3 or 4 things you need but at the time you dont really need.

I've always liked the look of this but the thing that puts me off most games like this is the people are nearly as big as buildings so look like a community of giants.

Anno is the most fun ive had in this genre Awesome game, might play the expansion one day
