Are there any special things I need to do here?

I just dragged the WAV files to Foobar2000 and clicked play and it seems to work, I'm using a E-mu 1212M for what it's worth...

not really. so long as everything is configured for 24/96 for bit perfect. in vista that means setting the drivers AND the playback devices to 24/96 which is a pain when you need to keep changing lol.

I'm using XP professional, Foobar 2000 as my player, and my soundcard is a E-mu 1212m which has a high-end DAC.

Is vista really needed then? FWIW, I'm using the analogue outs on the soundcard, going to balanced headphone amp then on to some HD-580's.

I'd rather not install Vista really as a lot of my hardware and software won't work with it. :(

no vista wont be needed at all. in xp the only thing you have to do is make sure your soundcard drivers and foobar are both set to 24/96:) if you need varification that its working, you can use RMAA and do a loop back test

Excellent, I've set up another profile for my soundcard to 24/96 and using ASIO in Foobar which bypasses the whole windows mixer. I've also set Foobar to output in 24bit, hopefully it's done the trick.

I'll look up the RMAA thing, it's always nice it know if it's working or not. :)

RMAA is marvelous, ive used it to test everything from mp3 players to sound cards. if its working, you should see a frequency response flat from pretty much DC right up to 45khz. mine measures around -2.5 down at 45k in vista using 24/96:)

I've just downloaded it along with the user manual, it looks very good. I'll have to make a cable or two, but once I've done that I'll give it a go. :)
