Thanks for the replies

The drive is an LG GGC-H20L,LG website does not have any software listed for it.
It's so old it's probably discontinued now.

VLC does not appear to play Bluray's.

I believe VLC does it? Give it a try, report back :D

There is an unofficial plug in for bluray plackback. You have to pick the title to play and not all disks are supported.

I would look into using XBMC, it's the default program for HTPCs. Version 11 has bluray support I do believe. You can add plugins to this app for BBC iplayer and many many other streaming channels as well. It's can be customised very well and best of all it's free. If you have a smartphone there is a free app to work as a remote :D

If you are struggling you might find it best to rip the blurays instead and play them back from a file or even burn the HD rip to a DVD and keep the blurays packed away out of sight.

It doesn't play Bluray disks from its standard player, it will only play dvds.
You have to launch an external player like PowerDVD or TMT5 to play bluerays.
It will play back ripped blurays in file format like MKVs.

VLC are working on bluray but haven't finished it yet.

At the moment, afaik, there aren't any free solutions.

An option is using MakeMKV or similar to rip the disk to file then play it.

I meant that you might have received software for it when you purchased the drive (maybe check the box)?

I edited in about ripping the disks, sorry i missed your post or I wouldnt have bothered. Ripping makes the most sense that's what I do to be fair and playback my media libary with XBMC.

I have powerdvd12 ultimate. It is good but none of the versions are cheap. It's not hard to justify buying a new retail drive just to get the software with it and a new warranty.

Trouble is that any playback software he buys "cheap", I would imagine will only allow use on one machine not two. So it might make more sense to rip the disks after all.......I use DVDfab which is very easy to use but I'm sure there are alternatives

Many thanks for the replies.

The drive is so old I do not have the box anymore,I thought the software pack may have been available on the LG website, but it's not there.

Not to worry,I have downloaded TMT5 and it works well but,as was stated it is only licenced for 1 computer, not much use to me.

My next question was to be which software to rip the disc, but I see that DVD fab has been mentioned so I will try that.

Thanks for the help

Alan
