Playing Deus Ex for the first time

With all the talk of HR, I've been trying to play Deus Ex through. I've never played it, though contrary to everyone elses opinions, I did play Invisible War and really enjoyed it. It was the first game of its type that I'd played, giving you so many options, and I had good fun with it.

So I decided to give the original a go, I'd had it on Steam for a while so installed it, and also the New Vision mod and the DX10 renderer thing, but even with those the game just couldn't hook me. I want to enjoy it, but it just seems... I don't know, its just not gripping me. I know I'm only a little way in, and I hate to say its just because of the old graphics, but I'm finding it hard to get into, though I am only on the first mission getting into the Statue. Is it worth persevering?

Um, YES!

Keep going. The first mission doesn't reveal too much about the plot straight away. The game just gets better and better as it progresses. Don't be put off from the first mission alone.

Read the newspapers, listen to conversations; absorb the virtual world and you'll hopefully find the experience pays off.

Deus Ex just isn't one of those 'lock and load' fps games - although it does have aspects of that throughout.

Also, having played the game when it first came out, if I revisit it now, I don't bother with any of the graphical mods anymore. Reason being, is that I found the graphical upgrades too distracting, so I don't know if just trying with the old graphics might give the game a different 'vibe' to you.

My friend adores Deus Ex. He even gave me his copy to play once, a long time ago.
Unfortunately, it woudln't run on my machine. Something to do with either 64bit XP, or my dual core making it jump about and bug. Could never get any of the fixes to work, so gave up :P

I was in a similar position to you (played Invisible War first) and I would agree that the Liberty island level is quite boring to start with. IW started very strongly (Seattle, Cairo etc) and then faded away with some crappy arctic levels, whereas Deus Ex is the other way round, the first level is quite dated and you don't have enough equipment/abilities yet to make it massively enjoyable (unless you enjoy stealth perhaps).

I would recommend sticking with it because it is very rewarding in the long run. However I do think it is a shame that it starts off the way it does, it was released at a time shortly before hand-holding became more commonplace, so it can be a little daunting at first. I tried playing it again last year and gave up on Liberty Island as well.

Yeah a lot of people say it's because of the dual/quad cores making the game run to fast, but the simple fix is to just enable vsync - well in my experience anyway. Works fine in all versions of 64bit Windows I have tried: XP, Vista, Windows 7.

I'm going back and trying it on Windows 98 SE at some point, since that was what I used to play it back when it came out, along with an old spec computer and CRT monitor.:o Call me nostalgic, but I have yet to recreate the same experience today with modern hardware, although I've come very close!

Don't give up! Great game, and very rewarding later on!

I agree that the game gets much better as it progresses. The game's real strength is in its story, so that's to be expected.

Also, have you played The Longest Journey? If not I strongly advice you to get it. I first played it last year and I was absolutely blown away by how amazing it was.

I never saw the attraction either. It was a good game, but no more than that. I think the setting / atmosphere just didn't do it for me. Seem to remember getting as far as a big oil tanker before I gave up.

It is funny when you go through and remember just how blind NPCs are. MGS style of only being able to see 5ft in front of there noses.

I don't get why the first level gets so much hate. Its a nice introduction. Great fun to hack all the computers and read personal emails in the Unatco HQ afterwards too. You can see subtle hints of things to come.

That has a fixed .exe to stop it running too fast, its what I'm using.

And thanks for the replies guys, I'll persevere some more then! Just died a few times after managing to kill the first guard with one hit and thinking I could do the same to the other guards... nope XD
Going to try the sneaking now.

Kill with what? Melee weapons can be very dodgy. Particularly the Baton and trying to 1 hit KO from behind. Sometimes it works fine, others they just shrug it off and shoot you in the face.

As for Pistols. They aren't that accurate to begin with, its only a small deviation but enough to make you hit the Torso instead. Once you get it to Master or have all 5 Accuracy upgrades the pistol is a 1 shotting machine.

You definitely have to persevere, get some augs, get some levelling going with your skills. I think you need to get a few levels through before you can truly say if you like it enough to continue.

Side Note: It is my current SP game of the moment, and I have been playing it on and off for the last few months. Sunk over 30 hours into it, and still a way to go till the end. Really really enjoyed it so far, but procrastinating over finishing it due to having too much fun in online multiplayer games (UT3 and BC2). Remember, the game rewards exploration.

Yeah, the baton. I seem to be able to get the first guy pretty consistently, though he's always distracted by the dock, running past me, so I just run up to him and smack him from behind, for the other guards I've been slightly more gung ho, sneaking up nice and close, then running the last meter to try and smack them, so often they turn around before they hit me, which could be decreasing my damage? I'm not sure. I'll try and keep going though :)

Thats 1 of the reasons I dislike the games skill point 'reward' system... it rewards you for doing the same thing multiple ways independently. Like taking the direct route gets you some points, but then going the 'back' way also gets you points.

Nah its just a bit iffy. I've been doing a no kills run through using the Baton, Riot Prod and Tranq Darts and even with Run Silent it has a nasty habit sometimes of not 1 hit KO'ing people. If you're finding the baton a bit dodgy its best to change to Pistol and just hide somewhere till the reticule is at its smallest as they walk past you.

Quicksave is your friend :D

Thats one of the things I loved about the game, I trained up the pistol skill and got all the mods for it and ended up with something that puts the sniper rifle to shame lol - 1 shot headshots with pinpoint accuracy to the other side of the map :D

I have to admit tho I find the game very hard to get into now due to being spoiled graphics wise by newer games, even tho I played through the game about 7 times in the 12-18 months after it was released.
