hmnmmmmm,

m,y comp keeps telling me i need a DVD Decoder thing - im sure i never needed this before? Im just trying to run a dvd through my pc!

Can anyone enlighten me as to why i can no longer play DVD's and can someone also please point me in the direction of some free software to do it - i thought DivX worked?

thankyou please.

Windows doesn't come with a DVD Codec & it ain't free. Have to buy either Nero 7 or CyberLink PowerDVD or any other DVD software to get the codec which will also enable all media players (i.e. WMP, Media Center, etc) to play DVDs :)

DivX codec is juts for DivX & XviD encoded videos :)

i am sure that is not the case. you don't need to buy any software to play dvds.

go to videohelp.com and you should find plenty info there. there is a ton of open source software for this kind of thing.

You should be able to buy an OEM copy of Power DVD for a few quid (ocuk used to sell it). If you download the trial now you won't have to reinstall when the disk comes, just acivate it using the serial number of the CD sleeve.

You can download the mpeg 2 dscaler codecs for completley free and still use windows media player to play the dvd.

yep, that's the stuff. you don't really need to pay for anything to watch any video.

i even have software (open source) that allows me to watch flv files in wmp.

also, i dunno if anybody has mentioned media player classic. great bit of kit. i use this as well as vlc.

ffdshow will allow you to play dvds in any compatible media player, including wmp. it also has a host of processsing options to improve picture quality:)
