Playing films on xbox 360 from external HDD

Trying to play films on the 360 from an external HDD, the drive is formatted to NTFS, the 360 recognizes the drive and you can see the films etc and when you try to play, you get the file type not supported message.

I have different file types on there, MKV, avi,MP4, none of them play, any ideas?

Using the xbox 360 Media player and it has been updated, still no joy.

It won't play MKVs at all. I used to find the 360 was quite fussy about other files whereas the PS3 would play most things, there's not a lot you can really do about it though.

Ah well that sucks, some reason it won't play avi files either!

the 360 is very fussy when playing video from external hdd. its more pain then its worth trying to find what works

Managed to get MP4 to play and also AVI, MKV file i have had to convert to MP4, pain in the arse!

MP4's are about all I could get the Xbox to read, bit of a pain but I found streaming them from my PC to my xbox better as it handles more formats then.
