I'm going to be building slowly once again so whilst saving for parts I'm going to plug my laptop into a monitor (tends to get warm with the heating on so i'm going to use a laptop cooler on my desk)

Anyway,

I know I'll either buy a 280 or 290 graphics card along with an i5 2500, 3570 or 4970 etc.

So I'll be gaming on high settings, now finally my question.

Having a high res setting in game on a 1080p monitor, will it look great?

Or to take advantage of games like the Witcher 3 etc, get a 1440p monitor?

Depends on the size of the screen. Gaming at 1440p or 1600p is pretty awesome on a large monitor like a 27, 29 or 30". I play BF4 at 1600p on a 30" Dell with a 770 and it looks great, but the 60hz limit is not great for gaming.

Personally I would go with something like a 27" 1440p 120hz. Would be ideal for gaming as long as you have a high end card with enough vram (4gb ideally).

The 290 is a 4GB card but given room on the desk I'm buying (me and the missus live in an open plan studio, it's nice but I cannot have a massive rig/desk set up back when I lived alone) So I doubt I'll go above 24" which is why I'm concerned.

I just upgraded my tv from 32 to 42" and res looks similer (1080p) it was more colour and depth I noticed on a larger screen, so that's why I'm wondering whether it'll be worth having a higher spec monitor on a small size. I opted against a cheap 4k tv that was 40" on peoples reviews of not noticing much change for the price.

I think it does depend on your table depth as well.

For myself, my table depth is around 70cm, so a 23"to 24" screen will be of the optimal size.

At that size and range, a 1080p is good enough.

But again, if you'd like to turn your head while gaming then there's nothing wrong to go for a larger size and hence 1440p :D

Or three 24" 1080p screens for looking around with :D:D:D
