Playing nostalgic games with mouse

I have recently built an Pentium 3 machine and enjoying playing some older games and programs.

Does anyone else feel that using a mouse with old FPS games feels wrong? I always played early FPS games with a keyboard only on PC. Default keys were cursors, left control to shoot and left alt to strafe.

Using a mouse in Doom, Duke numkem 3d, Rise of the triad etc. doesnt feel right and you need to manually enalble mouse look.

The only games I can remember using a mouse on were non FPS - Connon fodder, Syndicate, C&C, Lemmings etc. Amiga however I seem to remember using a mouse to play behind the iron gate (great game) and maybe a couple others

Mouselook really only came in properly with Duke Nukem and Quake, so it was early days and they hadn't worked out all the issues.

I remember slaughering my colleages in my office at Quake when it came out (I worked for a game publisher back then, so it was research, honest!) as I was using mouselook but they were still using keyboard only. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Try playing some pre-mouselook 3D games like System Shock and Ultima Underworld to see how bad control methods were back then.
