Playing old games on Windows 10

I am using x64 version of Win10. And I want to be able to play the following games:

FA Premier League Manager 99 to 2002.

I was able to acquire 2001 and it will not install because I am on a 64-bit version of Win10. Even after I have set compatibility to use Win 98 and even Win XP SP2 and SP3. I can only get as far as the autorun opening up and when I hit install, it states it cannot run on a 64-bit OS. I even went into the Setup\English\Setup.exe file and set the compatibility to Win98 and WinXP and it just states it cannot run.

I am due to get 2002 to arrive later this week and I know I will be faced with the same problem.

So, what options are available to me besides re-installing Win10 and using the 32-bit version? I was looking at perhaps a virtual environment, but I am not sure where to start with this. I don't have any Windows server OS to use. But is there a virtual environment I can install on Win10 to be able to run these games?

These are Win 98/XP games though, not DOS?

You might need to use a virtual machine running 98/XP.

That's the other idea. I have had a quick look and looks like I need to enable Hyper-V on my machine and hopefully this should do the trick. But I will keep my options open.

That D-Fend looks like it does have the ability to run Windows based games.

It's possible that the installer is 16-bit, and since no 64-bit version of windows comes with 16-bit compatibility it'll just not work even with compatibility mode set to an older version of windows.

You're either going to have to find a method that will allow you to install it in a 64-bit OS, or you'll have to install an older OS in a virtual environment.

I've installed VirtualBox and installed WinXP on it. It got as far as installing the program. But when I run it, it appears the application starts, but then it goes back to the Windows desktop. So still need to work out a few kinks.

Hey!

Did you have any luck playing any of the FA Premier League Manager games?

As I am a true nostalgic in gaming, I would really like to play some more of the 2000 version, and have tried sporadically over the last decade to play it. And as you at one point tried with dosbox (VirtualBox in your case), but with the same result as you, going back to the desktop.

Easiest solution put a second hard drive in pc
Put xp on it
Making sure it's only drive connected at the time so don't mess up your boot record
You could spend a long time messing around with a vm or dos box
It took me ages to make sensei soccer work properly for my step son

Genuinely no Idea how to do that with a hard drive, as far as i was aware dosbox wouldn't work, and with a vm I just get error =-13 when I try and Install It. :(

Problem with virtual machines is that pass through and/or rendering API emulation is often quite limited - Virtual Box IIRC only supports DX8 and 9 somewhat fully, DX10/11 partially through emulation and any other versions are either not supported or only very limited (and likewise the equivalent versions of Open GL) and if a game does any tricks with direct hardware access it might fail completely.

Something I did a few years back was setup an old laptop that had a GeForce 8800GT equivalent GPU and Core 2 Duo era CPU with an older OS output via HDMI capture to my main system and use a USB KVM (Aten US224) so as to switch my keyboard/mouse so as to not mess about with a whole separate system setup and maximum convenience though HDMI capture hardware tends to be a bit expensive and hit and miss if it induces lag or not and whether the software allows you to run it in preview mode in a useful way for this purpose.

Options
Vm as you found not always straightforward ~not looked up error 13~but does your cpu support virtualisation and is it enabled in the bios
Add a hard drive that way your retro games can be totally separate ~it's pretty basic diy just some people get intimidated because it's a computer ~if you can do even basic DIY in the house or car then you can do this ~few screws and plug a couple of cables in
Add a second operating system to your existing hard drive ~likely to be more difficult than adding a 2nd hard drive for you
Set up a 2nd pc for the games ~more costly and need the space to do it
Get a laptop for the games ~but if want to share big screen, mouse and keyboard again more cost and more stuff to do like kvm switch

. . .
That sounds like a plan; over the decades, from various sources, I have collected installation media going back through 7, Vista, XP, Me, 2000, NT, 98, 95, 3.11 and even MS-DOS - let's see how far back I can go ;)

As it happens, as a New Year resolution I have been chucking out all my ancient games, components, utilities, etc. I used to be a fan of Doom & Wolfenstein and can't face consigning them to landfill.
