Playing 'the game' at work

Keep your integrity and dont play the game, thats what i do.

Seen far too many arse licks and the like, its quite sickening to see how morally corrupt people are.

My work is riddled with this crap, and I keep having to remind myself to take part in it. I work in an engineering firm where the engineers are heavily field based. This means we are not in the office much when the important decisions are being made. As a result the people who are seen to be present at these times are the non technical staff, and on average they drift higher in the company that their qualifications and understanding of the business justify.
With this power of authority they have made 'the game' an essential part of our work.mone example was a customer service training course they wanted us all to do. Module 1 was a video that was almost exactly the same as the training video from The Office ( remember the cheesy nineteen eighties thing). We were expected to sit there and take it in, and have a spiritied discussion of how we could be more like the people in the video. There was uproar among the other engineers, and as a result the remaining four modules were cancelled because they knew they had taken it a bit too far.
However I have decided that I am just going to play it to the best of my ability, but unlike them I have the knowledge that I understand how the business works - and I know that if we were taken over I would survive while they would be the first to be cleared out. If they ask me to wear pink Wellies I will wear them gladly, and tell them I wish I had come up with such an innovative idea.

I completely avoid playing the game in every aspect, I hate that poo. I don't even eat in the staff canteen - you would think ass was the dish of the day, everyday in that place.

But there are plenty of suckers around me trying it on, taking credit for my work etc. I'm lucky to have a great head of group who can smell ******** a mile off and tells me not to worry about the game, so I dont :)

This is why I've never done well in my work, I refuse to play the corporate game. My bitter view and summing up is this...

Employees are judged on number of hours they spend in the office, and not on the actual amount of work they do. Frequently I would see people who I knew didn't do half as much work as me getting promotions just because they turned up half and hour early everyday and left an hour late. On the odd occasions I did need to work late, I'd often walk through the office and see people staying, yet not actually doing anything.

I've seen far too much nepotism in the corporate environment, family members of bosses given jobs and pay-rises often blatantly.

I also refuse to play the entitled staff member, I once worked with a guy who told me he'd go and see the boss once and month and ask for a payrise. My view has always been that my bosses should see how good a worker I am and offer it to me.

I've also never been on to blow my own trumpet to pimp myself. I've always done lots of stuff above and beyond my remit but I don't go running to the boss and say "look what I did", as a result I've always found myself massively appreciated by my colleagues but often overlooked by my bosses.

Lol, i was gonna say, "switch on, get with hte program, don't be so stubbornly naieve".
Then i realised you were pretty much describing me in your post.
I'm pretty much exactly the same. I tell my MD at each review that i don't need a pat on the back to tell me i've done a good job. I don't kiss-ass like so many who come in early and stay late (they never do this when the boss is away). I just come in do my job, go home, and am satisfied in myself that i've done a good days work.
He actually appreciates my cander, BUT.....not all bosses would see it this way, so i do think there are times when you have to tow the party line. If you're gonna accept the man's wage, then accept their working practices. If not, find another job.
Right now, i'm comfortable, as i'm allowed to be who i am (not a rebel, just more black and white), not some suckup with a hidden agenda.

Power to the peeeeoppppple........who don't lick the corporate sack!
