Hello.

I know this is a slightly pointless thread. However, perhaps it might encourage some people to buy this thing.

I only really use my PS3 as a media player, mainly DVD's and Blu-Ray, as I have a 360 for gaming. Until now I have been using a PS3 controller for controlling films, which was a bit annoying (on that note, I am sure X used to pause a film, but now it doesn't do anything).

So I picked up the Bluetooth remote (official one) for £15 and it is AWESOME. I can do everything on it, from turning the console on, navigating the XMB, playing the film etc. Now, I know this is obvious stuff but for some reason I was really surprised. It has made watching films and stuff much less of a pain in the arse. I love it.

So yeah, no point to this thread really, but if you have a PS3, and watch a lot of films on it, buy the remote :)

BYE.

I have the official remote but never use it. I actually keep ity in a draw out of the way of the other remotes as you only need to accidentally tap a button and it turns the blasted console on!!!! Really annoying, but I guess that's bluetooth for you... no line of sight needed like an IR remote!

Only thing that annoys me about the remote is the fact that you can accidentally turn on your PS3 by glancing your fingers over ANY of the buttons.

agree +1
That & the fact it hasnt got a backlight for when you've watched movies in the dark are its only faults.

Have you had the batteries die yet? I've still got the original AAs in mine.

As said. Fantastic piece of kit. I've you watch films on the PS3 you shouldn't be without one.

No, and I suspect they will last a long time, which kind of makes my point mute but it still would have been nice to have all rechargeable peripherals.

I use the remote for watching blu-rays and showing friends and family photos etc and it is a great piece of kit. I've only just had to replace the batteries since buying it on day one !!.

Tip for Sony when they release an updated version - give the essential buttons a backlight !!.

I don't like it now that I've stuck the PlayTV overlay on it. The buttons are difficult to press unless you get your finger right in the centre. I still naturally just pick up the DS3 pad to control the TV.

I never bothered sticking it on. Ruins the look imo (as far as TV remotes go it's a good looking one... I think so at least.).

Have to agree with the point about accidentally turning the PS3 on though.

Isn't there meant to be a really good third party remote that's backlit ? Can't remember what it's called.

EDIT: Yes, yes there is: GioTeck Media Remote for PlayStation 3

I have two ps3's and with the original 60GB version bought on day one I have the official remote which is great and just works (I have mine on the table also so havent really noticed the "any button on" ....feature)

I agree a few buttons being backlit would be good (and then usb charging would be essiential imo) - but I dont really miss it that much

However with my second ps3 I couldnt get hold of an official remote so I have probably spent around £25-£30 on a couple of IR ones, a really cheapy one which was no good at all and anoother one which is basically like a sliding phone, with majority of buttons hidden under a panel but neither of them are anywhere as good imo as the official one

Great product for the price imo, Sony really have got peripheral pricing right this generation with this, the bluetooth headset and the keypad all coming in at under £20 each.

The issue caused with the PS3 switching on with any button press is a design flaw sadly, but strangely enough it's a design flaw caused by the PS3s operating system. Reason being that the original firmware didn't allow controllers to switch off after being idle, maintaining a bluetooth connection constantly would have drained the remotes batteries very quickly so they designed it to switch itself off. The catch of this is that they had to design it to resume its bluetooth connection when you pressed any button, a bluetooth device connecting to the PS3 causes it to switch on, hence why it switches on when you press any button.

Thanks for explaining that - makes more sense

I guess you could still have a sliding remote, with most keys covered to make it easier to handle without turning the system on - probably the only away around it unless they can subtly change the OS with a little more experience

I'd like them to introduce an option to disable the ability to switch the PS3 on with a bluetooth device. That would remove the issue with the bluetooth remote and i store my controllers next to my PS3 so having to go over to it to switch it on wouldn't bother me as i do that anyway.

This also shouldn't affect the PS3s remote play function as that is triggered via a wireless connection, not bluetooth.

ive had mine for a while and i think its better the using the controller as i would skip chapters instead of just fast farwarding, only down side is no volume control
