Details and video included.

Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.

In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:

Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)

Sort your friends via their online status
Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)

Video delivery service on PlayStation Store

Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

Meh, how about they speed up how long it takes to delete messages and add friends, sometimes I've had to wait up to a minute to add someone to my friends list after entering their name.

On top of that, trophy system is slow as **** when used in-game, it's a disgrace.

Also the speed of trophies has increased, if you compare a friends game that he hasnt got its now a - instead of 0%.
Browser speed has increased and you can now cut n paste text (also reveal spoilers)
Volume normalizer not tried it yet but its there
PSN store now gives you an ETA on how long a Download will take
Sure there will be a few other bits hiding in there.
Took me about 3 mins to DL and 2 mins to update, cant complain about free stuff to improve your system even if its not what YOU wanted.

See why not list them too, instead of just going on about text chat as if it's something revolutionary. :o

I haven't looked at this yet, but last time I checked my fridnds were already organised by Online then Offline(Think it has always been like that) and I can already send text messages to anyone using the XMB, in game or not?

This is what I thought too lol

Just updated mine, but haven't had a play yet.

Online friends have always been listed at the top, and offline beneath, and yes, I've used the XMB to text chat with mates in other games many times before ;)

Hey, you bought that new Zombie game on your UK account? Damn! ;)

Vin.

They've changed it now so the offline people are ordered by when they were last online. I hate that so have switched it back to default (online/offline each sorted alphabetically)

This text chat thing is actually quite cool as it remains open while you play and logs chat from other members, you can also have multiple chat rooms. Imagine IRC on your PS3 that you can access in game basically. From what i can tell you can even leave chat rooms open indefinitely and rejoin them when you like, so you could have a OcUK chat room for example that people can join and leave.

Just set up a ocuk SF4 chat room and invited the first few SF4 players whos names came to mind then switched off my PS3. Will be interesting to see if the room persists without me there to 'host' it. If it remains permanently and people can leave and join as they like after they've been invited once it could prove quite useful.

Why o why can they not copy the Xbox and include a private voice chat through the XMB? So many times i've been playing one thing and a mate playing the other where it would have been nice to have a chat going. Text chat?! Whatever...

Hmm appears the rooms function really well, you can create a room and it remains in all those peoples' accounts that you've invited until they chose to delete it, even if they switch off their PS3. So technically the OcUK SF4 room i created could last forever now.

Problems are though, 16 person limit and the amount of text you can type is abysmal, like 10 words max. God knows why they did that.

Ok downloaded the new firmware, Is it me or the xmb is slugish and when im in game is slugish too and lags and slowdown, this is playing gta 4, was playing it yesterday night seem fine
